Even when using prop weapons, strict policies need to be followed. In fact it's a good idea to have a written policy as a part of your theatre safety manual. Here's an excerpt from my high school theatre operations book... District policies prohibit the carrying, possession or use of a firearm – or ...

A few random excepts about headsets from my theatre operations book for you... I can't recommend any one brand, but for anyone thinking about installing or upgrading a headset system, consider that both wireless and wired headsets have their benefits and you should probably spec some of each. WIRED ...

This is an important topic! In most states tech theatre is a CTE course – meaning it's a vocational subject, and should only be taught by teachers with a CTE endorsement. Sadly, most school districts don't recognize this, and think that the Drama teacher should teach tech theatre. Would they let their ...

If an MFA acts like a PhD in one's state, then that should be reflected in the teachers' Salary Schedule. Check your district's Salary Schedule. For instance, the district I live in (I no longer teach at a district) has salary categories for MA+0 up to MA+90, and then PhD is the same pay rate as MA+90. ...

I don't have a "code of conduct" by name, but I do have a Theatre "Etiquette" handout (read: safety rules) for any events that come into a theatre, which could also be adapted for students. I've attached the handout – I've left if in Word so that anyone may use it and adapt it to their specific situation ...

Hi Analiese, It's so great that your school may be getting a new fine arts building! Even if your facility will be small (although 300 seats is nothing to sneeze at!), as well as starting to plan for the physical build of the space, be sure to plan for who will be using it. Because everyone will ...

I have a free resource for you, comparing sports coaches to the people who work on plays. It's helps you explain to your admin why they are practically one and the same, and why theatre "coaches" should be paid just as much. (Although, hourly, custodians are paid more than either - go figure!) You ...

Like Jerry, I'm also a fan of Lycian followspots for schools. And, like Michael, I also (highly) recommend www.PNTA.com (they're in Seattle, but they'll ship anywhere). Also, check out https://www.usedlighting.com/search?page=&sort=&grid=h&raw=0&k=followspot&filters=() – you might be able to afford ...
