  • 1.  Theatre Department Code of Conduct

    Posted 01-25-2024 15:33

    Greetings Colleagues!

For a grad school class (and potentially our program) I am trying to find student codes of conduct for theatre programs. If anyone is willing to share a document or link to either your school or department code of conduct, I'd be so grateful. Thanks in advance!

We have a theatre department handbook that has a code of conduct, merit and demerit system, etc - you can look at it by going to my website - www.prospertheatre.com

Happy to answer any questions you have.

Here is a copy of mine. Oddly it's been a little controversial the past two years because we include in it the right we have to search their rehearsal bags, random drug test and even drug dog searches. Honestly this is something I actually did on only one occasion years ago, but it's still in there just in case. 😉 Never made sense to me that a parent would balk at that, but here we are. My principal initially asked for a copy and then told me to wait before requiring them on the next production, but has continued since then to tell me to go ahead and use it again. I think it's a good thing to cover bases.

I don't have a "code of conduct" by name, but I do have a Theatre "Etiquette" handout (read: safety rules) for any events that come into a theatre, which could also be adapted for students.  I've attached the handout – I've left if in Word so that anyone may use it and adapt it to their specific situation (with room for your school logo on top).

    All the best,

    Beth

Here is our Performer Code of Ethics, which was based on a document from the late actress Kathleen Freeman and her theatre company. You may remember her from Singing in the Rain, advising Lina Lamont to have "nice, round tones..."
