    Hi there!

I am curious if anyone has gathered a list of masters programs in theatre education that are online/remote. I am interested in length of program, any time required on campus, number of credits required, location, cost. I am hoping to see a comprehensive list to be able to compare/contrast the options. Thank you in advance for any information!

Southern Oregon University has a teaching program that focuses on production. It is in Ashland so seeing plays from the Oregon Shakespeare Festival is part of the curriculum. It is a summer program (2-3 weeks), with projects also during the school year.

Since so many HS drama teachers are expected to handle all the technical subjects, including set/lighting/sound/costume/prop design, I'd like to see more about this included in these programs.

I received an M. Ed in Curriculum and Instruction - Theatre Pedagogy online last year from Southeastern Oklahoma State University. Super affordable program, I paid $7,500 I think it's around $8,000 now for the entire degree. They are 7 week classes and the professors expect everyone to be working teachers that are crazy busy so it's catered to that. It's 30 credit hours and took me a year and a half, but can be finished in a year if you take 2 courses at a time. It's a good option if you need a degree to advance your career that won't break the bank.

I am struggling big time.  I have a Masters in Education and a Bachelors in Business with my teaching license in Special Education, and endorsed in Marketing, Business Content, Informational Technology, BUT I need 5 classes to be endorsed in Theatre. I am in VIRGINIA and there is nothing. The endorsement school closed and all the other schools want me to obtain another degree. Not going to happen.  I literally have 50 years of stage experience and yet...

    Rebecca,

I know that University of Idaho has an online MFA in Theatre, but they also allow you to take courses as a non-degree seeking student. I need 2 more courses to teach at a community college, so I am signing up there.

I also recently discovered Mississippi University for Women has a low-residency MFA in Theatre Education with online courses offered. I don't know if they allow non-degree seeking students however.

    Hope this helps!

I'm finishing my thesis at the Mississippi University for Women and expecting to graduate next semester with my MFA in Theatre Education. The program requires 60 hours, mostly online, and can be completed in 2.5-3 years. There are two summer residencies of about 10 days each, which are actually pretty fun. Tuition is about $500/ch, and courses range from acting to technical theater to playscript analysis. Let me know if you have more questions. I'm happy to put you in touch with the program head, who is great.

I feel sure this list exists here already, but here's what I have from my research. This hasn't been updated in a few years because I chose a program in 2021.

I chose the MFA in Theatre Education at Mississippi University for Women, and I graduate in just a few weeks. I'm happy to answer any questions if people are interested. Theatre Education, MFA – Department of Theatre (muw.edu)

Hollins University (Summer MFA in Playwriting)

University of Idaho (MFA in Theatre Pedagogy, all online)

Roosevelt University three six-week summer sessions (30 hrs)

University of Houston MA, about $10,000/semester, https://uh.edu/kgmca//theatre-and-dance/theatre/graduate/summer-ma/, 4 weeks/summer for two summers, includes short studies in major arts cities, an MA

University of Northern Colorado MA Theatre Education, 36 hours

Central Washington University, MA in Theatre Production

Southern Oregon University Master of Theatre Studies in Production and Design: https://sou.edu/academics/theatre/programs/master-theatre-studies/, 3 2-wk summer sessions

UNC Greensboro MEd (might not translate well to teaching college), 3-week summer sessions http://performingarts.uncg.edu/graduate/theatre/site

I think Catholic University in (D.C.) has a program that's low residency.
