I'm not sure what length he is looking for, but it you want something contemporary, there is a good opening monologue in Sniper by Bonnie Culver--about 5 - 10 minutes. It is told through the eyes of a school shooter. Also, Monsters is a collection of bizarre contemporary monologues by Chris Bullard. ...

Gosh, what a great idea. It's a shame that scripts with seniors and teens is so hard to find. You almost have to create something. What about something that has characters who grow across the years. It's not my favorite play, but Love Letters could be a possibility, with teens reading the younger characters ...

Hello, I'm looking for three people to read the script of a new musical I'm considering for eventual production at a small theater and would like to know how it would play to a teen audience. Would someone be willing to read the script and do a brief summary of your assessment of it? I can send you a ...

I'm looking at a new musical for a community theater I'm associated with which often does shows appealing to teens. It revolves around students returning to class after the pandemic. It has a diverse cast . I would like to send a free copy of the script (and a link to the music samples) who would be ...

Dramatics Magazine is still around. It is published by the International Thespian Society. I'm not sure why you're not getting it or if there is a fee. But check them out It's still being published. ------------------------------ Jean Klein Playwriting Teacher in MFA program, Wilkes University] ...

It's very simple. The number of play publishers has decreased. Two of the biggest in the competition--Samuel French and PlayScripts, among others--have been gobbled up by a larger corporation--possibly Concorde? As you decrease competitors in a market, you almost always see a substantial price hike. ...

Yes! Project Gutenberg is definitely the best place to start. I can tell you that lawyers for authors' estates use search engines on Google and elsewhere (I do it for my own work) to track down unauthorized adaptations or usage of any of their clients' works. And they will shut your performance down. ...

Love this question. I'm mainly teaching playwrights, so my examples may be a bit different. I've used both Joe Turner's Come and Gone and Proof together with great discussions about their polarity. I would love to use Amadeus both as film and play to see the differences--and there are many--between ...

Interesting question for me as a playwright. I've written plays with the issue of a younger and an older version of the same character. I think you're right about the gestures and the mannerisms. In my case, the same actors both played the older and younger versions of themselves - about a 25-year difference. ...

Depending on the age of the women, there is a short play by Cindy Dlugolecki called Royal Tea-the premise is that the fairy godmother is retiring and the various fairy tale princesses (Snow White, Cinderella, etc) are in a dither about what to do. There is optional fairly simple music. Great message ...

I agree. The playwrights as well as the publishing houses need to be protected. I have always allowed schools to video an archival copy for their records of my own scripts. But I personally would go after any school or theater that had posted a video of one of my scripts online. That must violate the ...

The voices/dialogue in The Crucible are, to me, almost stylized. This is not a society with diverse thinking, so I've never thought that characters should be individuated by their accents. Hi, those can be hard to find. If you're interested in new plays, hot off the press, I have a former Native American student who has a good short play that I might be able to forward to you. Also, a play that has won a lot of awards the deals with a hidden community founded by former runaway slaves and ...

What a neat idea! I'm going to pass that on to my grandson's drama teacher because alumni always come back for performances. I bought him a keychain at this place that kind of looked like a ticket--I don't know if they do specialized work or not. His was a going-away-to-college gift since he's graduating ...

Ditto to Kelly. I agree that you need something bigger to appeal to both audiences and performers. If you're concerned about the mix of male and female, you might want to look at something with flexible casting like "Almost, Maine," where actors could double roles. ------------------------------ ...

This sounds like a 50-50 proposition to me--whichever order you choose, you'll wonder if you had chosen the other.  If you're looking to building your department, you could possibly consider doing some readers' theatre nights with plays that come from a variety of sources. You can even stage some ...

I was listening to some recordings of the old, old radio shows like "Lights Out" and "Inner Sanctum." They had the original commercials with them. I don't know that you could use them, but they are really fascinating because they give you a glimpse of how that era felt. Amazing how many of them were ...
