For high school actors, "I and You" by Lauren Gunderson is magnificent! You need a male-presenting actor and a female-presenting actor and they are two different ethnicities (but they can be any ethnicities as long as they are different from each other). What about 'Outcry' by Tennessee Williams? It's a beautiful and poetic play. But it's dark - it's a brother and a sister.

I have always been partial to Talley's Folly by Lanford Willson.  It's a sweet story about a quirky couple who discover each other's foibles fit perfectly with their own.  But probably not for middle schoolers.  A challenging piece for high schoolers, but I have found that they step up to good material.  I've never done the play as it is a two hand and I usually want larger casts, but when the time's right, I would be on it in a New York minute.

If you might be able to use African-American women, and would be up for the challenge of guiding them to play well outside of their age range without stereotyping, try Emily Mann's Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years.  This title would also be good for getting actors to research their roles and the play's historical period(s).  It's published by Dramatists Play Service, Inc.

Kathryn, another good option is Oleanna by David Mamet. Blue Door is another that is very timely. Having Our Say is a wonderful play for 2 black females. Souvenir is a great 2-character play about real life Florence Foster Jenkins. All of these can be found on the website of Dramatists Play Service.
