Hi theatre educators, Is it becoming more common for teachers to do any sort of intimacy training? How do you approach scenes containing intimacy in your shows? I work with college student stage managers and am seeing that understanding of good practices is all over the map, which can be especially ...

I studied theatre in college in the early 70s and remember learning this then. No idea of the origin but I'll look through my old texts to see if I can find any clues. And now I'm very interested in your thesis 😊. Cheers, Linda ------------------------------ Linda Apperson Stage Manager and ...

Hi Karlie, I am sorry your students are going through this. Where is the school administration? Are they aware this is happening? Do they have policies about bullying? Do they support arts programs? It feels more systemic than just a few students. I wish you the best in your efforts to encourage ...

A short reader's theatre piece, or a staged reading, just something that would not require memorization, or sets, but that would showcase character development, might be nice in addition to improv. ------------------------------ Linda Apperson Stage Manager and Mentor Milwaukie, OR ------ ...

Anything Goes has a lot of tap dancing, and requires really strong dancers. It's fun. Bye-Bye Birdie is also a lot of fun and probably easier for younger students to handle in terms of the dance requirements. I have stage managed Birdie in a youth theatre and with adults. I've only stage managed ...

As someone who has adjudicated in person at the regional and state level and virtually for regionals, state and international, I can speak to how gratifying the experience is. Having the opportunity give feedback to theatre learners has been a learning experience for me as well. I would highly encourage ...

Hi Brian, I think it all depends on how you approach those characters. Francis Hue, who originated the part of Bun Foo on Broadway has said that the roles of Mrs. Meers, Ching Ho, and Bun Foo were revolutionary. He thought it was important "to actually have real Chinese guys singing and speaking ...

I've encountered that mind set in university, community, and professional theatre. It seems to be a close cousin to, "I'm more creative when I'm under pressure."   Teachers are so overworked and under resourced that they have abundant reasons why things happen at the last minute. That they still create ...

In addition to those telling their/our stories on social media, I think our current storytellers are who they have always been: the playwrights, poets, authors, song writers, dancers, and artists. What a good topic to explore! ------------------------------ Linda Apperson, Stage Manager and Mentor ...

Hi Sean, How wonderful to give students this opportunity to expand their experience with and understanding of theatre. It may be challenging during the pandemic, but my recommendation is to do theatre and see theatre. It will enrich your own knowledge immeasurably. Find a way to participate in local ...

Hi Julie,  I'd recommend "Under Milkwood" or "Spoon River Anthology". Both have very rich characters.  Cheers,  Linda ------------------------------ Linda Apperson Stage Manager and Mentor Milwaukie OR ------------------------------

Hi Karen,  I referred your question to a theatre colleague of mine from India and here is her response:  my favorite contemporary Indian-American playwright is Madhuri Shekar. Her play, "A Nice Indian Boy" should be appealing to high school students. It's youthful, funny, deals with important issues ...
