First, we feel your pain! Rebuilding a program is tough. I'm sure others will have lots of ideas, but from my experience, Sister Act is a great option. The show has name recognition and an overwhelming female cast. My kids loved the music, and you could even get a male faculty member to play the bad ...

Have you thought about Damn Yankees? I taught at an all male school and the guys loved that one. Guys and Dolls and Best Little Whorehouse in Texas are also really fun if you have the men! ------------------------------ Frieda Gebert Drama and Speech Boyle County Schools (Retired) Danville, KY ---- ...

We are looking to buy a good sewing machine, iron, and steamer for our new Costume Shop. What do you guys recommend for reliable long-term use? Brand, type, any other essential equipment? Thanks in advance for the guidance.

I directed Once on This Island with great trepidation a couple of years ago. It was different than anything I had done before. It was a WONDERFUL experience! The possibilities for staging and sets and choreography are endless.

Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind!!! This is one of my favorite shows. Lots of roles, lots of improv, lots of audience interaction.

My school is planning to do a large-scale version of A Christmas Carol, with hopes of it becoming an annual community event (in rotation with other Christmas shows). Over a period of time, we would like to purchase the necessary costumes to keep in house for the following years. For the first year, we ...

Another play a lot like Almost Maine, but not done as often, is Our Place. It has lots heart, funny, sad, big range. It also has a silent part for an older man so if you have a popular teacher or coach who would agree to perform (no lines to memorize!) It would be good for PR. Also it can be rehearsed ...

We did an interesting play, "We Are Antigone" that gave a modern-day view to the story. It is an all-female cast. Here is the link to info on it. https://www.playscripts.com/play/2220 ------------------------------ Frieda Gebert Drama and Speech Boyle County Schools (Retired) Danville, KY ...

Hi folks, Knowing the kind of uncertainty most of us will face in the theatre classroom this year, a friend and I began a project that begins in play-writing and culminates in performance, online or in-person. It's called the 2020 Vision Project and you can check it out at www.2020visionproject.usHere ...

A fellow troupe director and I have been working on a project that encourages Devising for the coming school year. We came up with the idea after presenting "Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind," (A collection of devised and improvised scripts) and attending a workshop on Devising. After watching ...

Here's a suggestion that would work well for online collaboration and performance: have students explore a nearby cemetery and work with the local Historical Society to learn about specific figures from their own local history buried in that cemetery. Then, write their own monologue or free-verse poem ...

I second the recommendation for High School Musical. I did it with my middle schoolers in the gym and it was perfect! And the middle schoolers LOVED playing high school students! We did exactly as John remarked, we rolled in tables for the cafeteria scene, rolled in a white board for the classroom, it ...

Hi folks, my district is building and opening a beautiful new theatre this fall. Has anyone planned a Grand Opening for a theater? Got any great ideas that worked well for the opening ceremonies? Please give me some ideas.

Hi folks, can you recommend any 3-4 week long programs for directors, especially any that accept international students? I have some terrific teachers who want to improve their skills and get new ideas for teahing theater. Thanks!

HI folks, I teach a lot of international students who are passionate about Musical Theater. Many of them cannot afford to move to the US for graduate studies, but they CAN afford to come over for a summer program. These students (20s-30s somethings) have finished undergraduate programs and now want to ...
