I also opted for the "Flintstones" approach. Works really well and reads great on stage. Use one set of swivel casters and another set of "set" casters and one of the actors can control how the boat moves. Happy to discuss construction if you'd like. Some directors will do emails/letters referred to as "Thanks but no thanks" and they are sent to each student that was cast giving them specific notes on what to improve or why they may have not been selected as a cast member. I think this helps the students have some 'reason' and helps deter any hurt ...
