Flight of the Lawnchair Man is an adorable musical for high school students. The story is sweet, the music is fun, and the staging offers lots of opportunity for creativity.

Your kids want to do Grease? You don't, for whatever reason? Check out Zombie Prom! The girl doesn't compromise herself. She loves the Jonny (without an "H") regardless his state of being.

Daddy Long Legs, John Caird & Paul Gordon, based on the novel by Jean Webster.  It's funny and sweet and tugged on the heartstrings, but isn't (too) cheesy.

I love so many--but my faves are Ragtime, Sweeney Todd, Les Miserables.  I also love Chicago, but don't plan on doing that one with high school.  Also loved doing Return to the Forbidden Planet!

Cabaret.  Our school staged it last spring, and it was the best theatre experience since I've worked there (about 13 years).  As far as the Kit Kat Girls, I had more costume design difficulties with the associated faculty (wanting to go more revealing) than with the students!
Also, for good or ill, scrawny awkward gentlemen students just love playing the men's roles, especially, of course, the villains!
Other favorites include Urinetown and The Mikado.

Into the Woods when they do it just right and you're crying at the end and Fiddler on the Roof with a cast that really gets the whole message and is able to project it.

Favorite musical to see?  Listen to? Direct?

For favorite all-around, it's got to be "She Loves Me".  The music by Bock and Harnick is some of their best, and the book by Joe Masteroff rivals "Cabaret". It is a sweet little play, with very moving moments, great ensemble bits, and some wonderful opportunities for actor/singers.

An overlooked musical that served us quite well at out high school was "Pacific Overtures".  It's not overdone, like many Sondheim's (I've seen some awful "Sweeneys"- the kids are too young to really get it) and it doesn't pose the design challenges of "Sunday in the Park".  But it has all of the complexity of these other Sondheim shows, both musically and with the book by John Weidman. It gives the director and students an opportunity to work on something that is highly stylized and extremely engaging. A challenge, but well worth it.

The Adding Machine. For the first time in a long, long while, I felt like I was watching (and hearing) something completely new and original (even though it is based on a play that is close to 100 years old). It's not an easy musical to like, and probably not one to do with high school students, but I found the experience to be exhilarating.
