I teach at a conservative catholic school and always have a hard time finding plays. Affairs and sexual innuendos are a no-no. We have performed Curious Savage, Out of The Frying Pan, Southern Hospitality, Fools, Musical Comedy Murders of 1940 (murder is ok apparently since it was funny and we had to change a few things for censorship), Leaving Iowa, Her Majesty Miss Jones, Don't Tell Mother to name a few...My hope is that the school will begin to let me put ratings on the shows, but no success yet. Any ideas?

Pygmalion (play version of My Fair Lady)
    Romeo and Juliet
    Marvin's Room
The Somewhat True Tales of Robin Hood
    Stuart Little
    Jack and the Bean Stalk
    The Jury Room
    Treasure Island

The Man Who Came to Dinner
    The Jungle Book
Miss Nelson is Missing (very easy musical with 6 actors)
    Much Ado About Nothing
    The Heiress
    Charlotte's Web
    Still Life with Iris

    Coming soon...
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
    Sense and Sensibility

The Secret Garden would work also. Good luck! I feel your pain!

I haven't produced it, but you might also look at one of the versions of A Wrinkle in Time.

Stage Partners has five different versions, adapted by four different playwrights.  At least one of them has the potential for really challenging ensemble work.  (The longer ones, logically, retain more of the story from the original novel.)

I teach at a conservative Christian school too. In the past five years since I began directing, we've done: Our Town, Swallows & Amazons (great literary adaptation, a play with music), Twelve Angry Men, Brainstorm (a semi-devised play about the teenage brain - amazing experience), and this year, my first play written for teenagers (most of which I dislike): Don Zolidis's "Nooses Off", an homage to Noises Off (which we could not do, unfortunately) and a spoof of Agatha Christie. Hilarious and really challenging to get the timing btw on and off stage action in Act 2 synchronized. Audiences loved it and the actors had a great time working on it.

My HS too is fairly conservative when it comes to language and specific adult references. Here is a list of plays that have hit the mark with both my students and my audiences over the years:

The Miracle Worker - William Gibson (story of Helen Keller and her teacher Annie Sullivan)

David and Lisa - James Reach ( HS students in a school for emotionally disturbed kids)

A Room With A View - Christina Calvin (classic romantic comedy- guy 'skinny dipping' scene is hilarious with the guys in long underwear)

Our Hearts Were Young and Gay - (if you can get past the title, this is a wonderful classic comedy from the 20's about two young women off on their grand tour all by themselves)

Harvey - Mary Chase (classic comedy- man sees invisible rabbit)

Moby Dick Rehearsed -  Orson Welles, (great ensemble divised 'rehearsal' of the classic tale with music)

The House at Pooh Corner - (children and families loved this)

The Importance of Being Earnest - Oscar Wilde

Pride and Prejudice - Joseph Hanreddy and J. R. Sullivan, but versions out there

Another thought for sources. I might have sent this another way, so sorry if this is a duplicate

Any adaptation of a classic novel or play usually has a number of characters. Dickens is a good choice for adaptations. As well as any adaptations of C. S. Lewis. You might also look at Christian writers who aren't preachy-Lucas Hnath who wrote The Christians comes to mind. I don't personally know that play. And check out which plays A.D. Players in Texas have produced.

I’m actually in a similar position that you are. I work at a Jewish high school with only boys. It’s very challenging to find two appropriate shows to do a year that are the right type of cast ,exciting ,interesting , and “kosher” ! So far I’ve done- Treasure island, a few good men, Caine Mutiny court martial, hound of the baskervilles, west wing follies. This year I’m doing Lord of the Flies and maybe Bamzooled or Star Stars. I’d love to create a list of appropriate shows!
