I haven't produced it, but you might also look at one of the versions of A Wrinkle in Time.

Stage Partners has five different versions, adapted by four different playwrights.  At least one of them has the potential for really challenging ensemble work.  (The longer ones, logically, retain more of the story from the original novel.)

In the past five years since I began directing, we've done: Our Town, Swallows & Amazons (great literary adaptation, a play with music), Twelve Angry Men, Brainstorm (a semi-devised play about the teenage brain - amazing experience), and this year, my first play written for teenagers (most of which I dislike): Don Zolidis's "Nooses Off", an homage to Noises Off (which we could not do, unfortunately) and a spoof of Agatha Christie. Hilarious and really challenging to get the timing btw on and off stage action in Act 2 synchronized. Audiences loved it and the actors had a great time working on it.

Another thought for sources. I might have sent this another way, so sorry if this is a duplicate

Any adaptation of a classic novel or play usually has a number of characters. Dickens is a good choice for adaptations. As well as any adaptations of C. S. Lewis. You might also look at Christian writers who aren't preachy-Lucas Hnath who wrote The Christians comes to mind. I don't personally know that play. And check out which plays A.D. Players in Texas have produced.

I’m actually in a similar position that you are. I work at a Jewish high school with only boys. It’s very challenging to find two appropriate shows to do a year that are the right type of cast ,exciting ,interesting , and “kosher” ! So far I’ve done- Treasure island, a few good men, Caine Mutiny court martial, hound of the baskervilles, west wing follies. This year I’m doing Lord of the Flies and maybe Bamzooled or Star Stars. I’d love to create a list of appropriate shows!
