    Good morning,
I posted this last fall, but did not receive any responses. Does anyone have a suggestion for a Theatre consultant in our near the Columbus, OH area.  Our district is moving ahead at breakneck speed to redesign our black box and so far there have been ideas presented which show a misconception of how a black box is used.

    Thank you,
    Holly Thompson

    Hi Holly,

My thought is to check with your local universities that offer theatre. Perhaps there is a professional person there that would be willing to offer input and advice.

    Best of luck,

Try posting on controlbooth: https://www.controlbooth.com/ There are a lot of theater professionals on it, including theater designers and consultants.

    Hello,

Although not in Columbus, you might try Paul Sanow (northern Kentiucky). He, and others can be found here:

Thank you all who have given me suggestions. I am passing these on to other members of the group and hopefully, we will get what we need.

I grew-up in Columbus!  I'd be happy to work with you on this project.  For every consultant, we are just a plane ride away.  I'll PM you with more information.

We have used Schueler Shook, Inc (there is an office in Chicago) to help us with theatre design.  Perhaps they could recommend someone locally.  I also did a quick search of Columbus to see if other theaters had Black Boxes and I found several.  You could contact those theaters to find out who designed them and assisted with the project.  It could be there is a local theatre tech person who has expertise who could, for a fee, talk to your design team.  When my school put in a Black Box the architect had no idea what was needed and put the HVAC and plumbing for that wing of the building through the theater.  It was so loud no theatre could ever happen there.  Thankfully we figured it out early in the process and the school stopped construction and hired someone else to redesign with input from our tech director.  It is worth the effort to find someone to help you with this.

There is no one geographically close to you. I'm in Wisconsin - about 9 hour drive away.

    Hello, Holly,

Many years ago I taught in a theatre dept. that did not hire a theatre consultant for their $57 million dollar performing arts complex. The number of useless design elements was staggering (can anyone say $1 million for a door that was always stuck?). Stick to your guns. I found this society online. No one in OH, but a lot of this kind of work is done remotely after an initial visit to the space.
