I'm trying to get my administration to allow me to produce 26 Pebbles next year (I feel very supported by my admin, and brought them into the conversation as a courtesy.) We have a fairly conservative community. I know the show is not at all political, but has anyone run into community pushback? ...

That's the one. I'm modifying it to just focus on having students create a concept for a jukebox musical. We are going to take a look at some examples, and they will wither create a plan for a musical centered on one artist, or several contemporary artists centered around a theme. I am restructuring ...

We read A Midsummer Night's Dream because it is a really pliable play, and it gives the younger learners (my intro class is predominately freshmen) a good base for Shakespeare, as they read Romeo and Juliet in ELA the same trimester. ------------------------------ Rebecca Black Teacher/Director Wayland ...

As I am trying to make my flexible plans for our winter show, I am on the hunt for a cutting of The Importance of Being Earnest. We are currently on hybrid, and I may only have 1/2 a roster to work with, so I'd like this to be an option. I can cut it myself, but I am also about to cut The Tempest ...

I directed Macbeth several years ago, because I love the play. My best advice is honestly...don't direct it in a high school. Besides the fact that it is cursed (I'm only half kidding) I really found that my students had a very hard time connecting with the characters. Shakespeare can be so challenging ...

If you honor the student's gender identity and cast as such you're not changing the role's gender. It's only if you are changing the script's pronouns and such. You can even have cross gendered casting (women playing men onstage and vice versa.) ------------------------------ Rebecca Black ...

I would encourage you to work with union representation here, as your superior cannot coerce you to break the law. Don't break the contract, you just can't do that. I would think that you have no choice but to cancel the production. But you should still be compensated for your work, and not be reprimanded ...

I directed this for the 2nd time in theSpring of 2019. You are more than welcome to use my cut script, at least as a starting point. There is no point in paying for a script in the public domain! Our script ran about an hour and a half with a 15 min intermission. I've set and acted in Shakespeare ...

Cast the play as the text demands. Remember the show will go on, and it will be as it will be. Don't drive yourself crazy if things aren't exactly perfect-especially where things are out of your control. Directing does not mean that you are the only responsible party for the success of the show. ...
