It's been several years since I directed this show, but if I'm remembering correctly, the big fireworks explosion happens in the basement of the house. We had a door that led to the basement and we used sound effects, a smoke machine, and lighting to create the explosion. When the actors reentered, they ...

We 3D printed all of the weapons other than the rope. I wanted them to look like the game pieces. We also made our chandelier out of acrylic crystals and wreath hoops. ------------------------------ Jennifer Gunther Teacher ------------------------------

Hello, We are producing Wizard of Oz (RSC) in mid November.  The only place I have found so far that offers rehearsal and performance tracks for this show is MT Pit.  However, their performance tracks are only compatible with iOS and Mac.  My school is all PC, and I also don't personally own any Apple ...

This is actually the only show I've done that anyone complained about the content. I had one parent tell me that he thought the song "Pandemonium" was inappropriate because the students took the Lord's name in vain. This parent was from a very religious family. My admin, however, liked the show and I ...

I am entertaining doing Curtains, but I am little hesitant because of the number of male roles.  It lists 7 male roles and 5 female roles in the casting information.  I know that I have three strong boys who will audition, two of which are also strong singers.  Does anyone have experience casting girls ...

I added an intermission after snack time is announced. My actors stayed in character and went out into the audience and interacted with them. We had a concession stand and some of the actors tried to convince audience members to buy them a snack. Olive kept asking people if her dad was there. Chip had ...

Hello, I am in the process of picking my shows for next year.  Like most programs, we will need to rebuild both financially as well as student involvement.  We were able to have productions this year, but Covid hit my program pretty hard. I want to choose a musical for the fall that will bring ...

Hi everyone!  I just wanted to share my school's virtual fall play with you.  Our show, Quaran-Teens premiers on our YouTube page starting tonight at 7:00 and ending Sunday at 10 p.m.  Quaran-Teens is a monologue based play on the teen perspective of the pandemic.  The play is written by Laurie Allen ...

I am really starting to hone in on planning for my spring production and I am exploring the idea of doing a Greek show.  I like the idea of incorporating mask into the costuming, plus I think there are so many things that can be done with a Greek chorus.  AND I haven't produced a Greek show before. ...

For our fall show, we are going virtual (like most theatre!)  But I have not idea how to pull it off.  I am directing Quaren-Teens by Laurie Allen.  This is a royalty free play, so I don't have to worry about that aspect.  It is a compilation of 15 monologues from the teens' perspective in the pandemic.  ...

Hi everyone! I teach Drama I at my high school which is a semester long class.  I have a unique situation this year (don't we all?).  We are doing a cohort system for the first semester.  We will have the same group of around 15 students in our room all day, every day, while delivering all of our ...

I directed the Broadway musical version of Little Women through MTI.  There is also a musical version through TRW.  I really love the music in the show and that strong female roles.  Honestly, this wasn't a favorite show for some of my boys, but it might be more well received now that the Little Women ...

I produced Spelling Bee a few years ago. It was a blast! I added an ensemble of The Putnam County Honor Choir. We created a mini stage for them to sit on, kind of like a 'gymtorium'.  They jumped into several of the songs. I even had Rona introduce them at the beginning.  They also played the roles of ...

I directed Peter and the Starcatcher in the spring and it was a wonderful experience. It was way different than anything I have directed before. Do not underestimate the blocking! It can be tricky but super fun. I had a vocal teacher instruct the music. Yes, there a two actual songs, BUT there is a ton ...

For your first question, there is always an administrator during my performances.  We do two full length productions a year.  I agree with the liability issue here.  Stress the importance of safety here.  I am assuming that the performances are open to the public, so you never know what might happen.  ...

Thank you for the feedback.  I do want to clarify a few things.  My spring show is Peter and the Starcatcher.  I did not double any of the roles and I added an ensemble so that I could have a larger cast than the traditional 12.  I wanted to allow more students an opportunity, and due to the ensemble ...

This is my fourth year as the director of my school's theatre program.  Each year, I have had students who auditioned and received a role drop the show because they didn't want an ensemble role.  This is more of a problem in the musicals because with the straight plays, I generally have to cut several ...
