It's definitely challenging, but artists deserve to get paid for their work. We don't get a free pass just because we're at a school. It costs money to do bigger name shows. ------------------------------ Becca Lillias ------------------------------

Not to be a jerk, but that's kind of missing the point of Chicago and theatremaking in general. We see how ridiculous these characters are and how their behavior doesn't get them what they want. I'd hope that your rehearsal process allows for extensive character discussions so your students understand ...

Haven't had any issues at all, and I've heard the mail itself has had some delays right now so it might be out of their hands. I know they say not to email over and over again because it delays their response, so that might be why you haven't heard back? I'd wait for them to get back to you. They're ...

This was the first year I was planning to bring my students, and we still have lots of fundraising to do. I know nothing has been officially canceled yet, but do we have a feeling either way so far? These kids will be so sad if they don't have this to look forward to, after their spring one-act competition ...

Maybe "claimed to be understaffed" isn't the kindest way of approaching this? It sounds like they're going through a big transition. It's definitely frustrating to not get a response, but maybe we can offer a little bit of empathy for the situation. Looking forward to seeing how things change once their ...

Peter and the Starcatcher is so overdone right now. But I'd love to see more productions of Begets, by the same author of She Kills Monsters. ------------------------------ Becca Lillias ------------------------------

I understand your concern, as not all communities can appropriately handle this sensitively. But if it offends you, maybe you don't need to use those items? It's not like the students aren't talking like that. ------------------------------ Becca Lillias ------------------------------

Samuel French, Tams, and MTI all have specific "School Editions" or "High School Editions" for some (but not all titles). Miss Saigon, Rent, Chicago, Les Mis, Heathers, A Chorus Line, Sweeney Todd, and Rock of Ages are ones that come to mind. There are definitely more. I think these are probably more ...

Oh my goodness, Dominique Morisseau for sure. I haven't read all of her work, but I've loved what I've experienced so far. Blood At the Root is marvelous (particuarly for high school students), and so are Paradise Blue, Pipeline, and Skeleton Crew. Add her to your list- you won't be sorry. ------ ...

I keep seeing references to teachers encouraging other teachers to "go around" the licensing company and try to talk to the author for a different answer.  Honestly, this seems really disrespectful to the author. Do we really think the licensing company doesn't talk to the writers or their agents? ...

What's the show/character? I know it might seem like it's against the greater good of the production, but it's important for the student to speak their concerns and not have someone else speak for them. Especially when it comes to their own body. ------------------------------ Becca Lillias ...

Be careful with cabarets or revues! As numerous posters have said, if there's any kind of costumes or choreography, you'll need to talk to the rightsholders and your school's ASCAP license won't cover it. ------------------------------ Becca Lillias ------------------------------

You would just submit for licensing like any other production. Licensing works the same way whether you're charging for admission or not. Be careful to be clear about how much you charge for the kids/tuition, because sometimes that's worked into your licensing fees. ------------------------------ Becca ...
