We re going with a One Act cutting of the Diviners for competition in the Fall. We alternate every year with a musical and a drama for One Act. This play has a bunch of parts and the opportunity to add some great, onstage musicians. It's a beautiful piece and all my cuts were approved! I was happily ...

Hi Rosemary, I hope you are surviving the storm! Thanks for the overview of reviews and such. It's a great refresher. I too would like to hear suggestions. It's been a while since I have directed a revue but have enjoyed them in the past.  Thanks again! DJ Queenan Savannah Country Day School qu ...

How wonderful that you live in an area that you can show Memphis to your kids! It is a wonderful show but the use of the "N" word rules it out for us in the deep South. It's probably a bit racey for us as well (Bible belt and all). We do a similar exercise using Oklahoma (Hugh Jackman version), discussing ...

I would recommend creating specific performance opportunities for those classes. Have an evening of One Act plays performed specifically by the students in those classes. They cold even write or direct them. Or, take those kids performing for lower grades at different schools or competitions. Good ...

When I came to my school the charge for the activity was already in place. I thought it strange but parents who were also teachers said things like: "Do you know how much it costs to be in cheer? Or football? The $45 that we charge for the play is nothing! Plus, it includes their show t-shirt. It's a ...

I applied for the rights to Chicago in May. After applying I received an email stating that it may take a few weeks before the request was processed and approved or disapproved. It's been 8-10 weeks now and still no response. Sam French recommends a plan B. So... doesn't sound like we're doing Chicago ...

Sounds like you are a very courageous person! I have had success with War At Home. It is based on students in a NJ high school just outside of NYC the morning of September 11th, 2001. Great play and extremely flexible. Although not royalty free, producing it virtually is. I used chairs and an American ...

I have directed Footloose and although I had a good response to the show, I am always cautious of/disappointed by musicals that are adapted from non-musical films. It's fine if all the music is written for the musical (like Hairspray where they used none of the music from the film). The trouble happens ...

Hi,Recently I took my class to state competition (having won our region). At the competition the other schools all had body mics and their own sound systems. We were definitely out-teched! Can anyone tell me what kind of system you might use that is so mobile? Thanks!DJ DJ QueenanDirector of Fine and ...

I found the big difference in the all the school editions is length. Verses are cut and reprises are cut and sometimes songs are eliminated. We did the school edition of Sweeney last year and were extremely successful with it. So much that we did the school edition of Les Mis this year. I do remember ...

We have a Fine Arts Night where all of our Performing Arts (Drama, Chorus, Jazz Band, Orchestra) present about 15 minutes per class. It is not optimal, but everyone gets seen. I also have begun working One Act plays at the end of the year. We have an evening of One Acts that can feature both of ...

Hi guys,I am producing Les Mis at school this year and have designed a turning set. We do not have a turntable. I have designed the one side of the set to be Paris and the other to be the barricade. In the past I have used wagon brakes on rolling pieces to keep them parked but I have never moved such ...

I didn't really think that we would be able to be successful with the bottle dance but my choreographer begged me to let her try. I was thrilled that we did it, every night, no dropped bottles and no special rigging! If we could do it, so can you! Have faith! The kids feel amazing when they do it! ...

Hi all, I am doing a production of Sweeney Todd with my Upper School kids. I am not afraid of working with blood, but wondered if anyone had done it and discovered any new and creative ways to do those scenes. I found renting the blades with the squiritng blood a bit pricey for my taste. Any great ...
