If anyone is planning (or has done) a letter/postcard/email campaign during Theatre in Our Schools month, I would love to see example letters, and also know to whom they were sent. I've found some great ideas on this forum for other ways to celebrate, but would love to hear what other events or activities ...

We're doing a Christmas theme for summer camp this year, and I'm on the hunt for short, tried-and-true Christmas themed reader's theatre pieces for my younger group, and a 10-15 minute play for my older group. I am expecting anywhere from 12 to 20 kids in this group, so I need a flexible cast size. ...

Dear Edwina is a fun musical, and you really only need one boy who can sing. My kids LOVED it.  The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza by Don Zolidis can be cast mostly gender neutrally and is a really fun show to do. ------------------------------ Dianne Rowe Theatre Arts Teacher Junior Thespian Troupe ...

Dear Edwina is perfect. Female lead, lots of featured moments, and only one of the male characters even really needs to sing. It's absolutely charming, and has a unit set. Costuming is easy, too. ------------------------------ Dianne Rowe Theatre Arts Teacher Junior Thespian Troupe 88177 Berry ...

How about costume and/or makeup morgues? Assign time periods, types of clothing (adults, children, formal wear, etc) and makeup types (animals, Broadway shows, wounds, aliens, etc) and have them find a set number of images for each. They can arrange them in Google slides with appropriate labels, and ...

Second vote for the Midsummer adaptation "...or the Night They Missed the Forest for the Trees." You can add fairies galore, if you need to expand the cast. https://www.dramaticpublishing.com/a-midsummer-nights-dream-night-missed-fo Other faves:  Cinderella: The Untold Story Bedtime Stories as Told ...

I'm so sorry you have a tough class! It really takes it out of you, I know.  Have you done pantomime? At least that's quiet. Have them re-start every time they get sloppy with movements. Work up to a silent-movie style live performance in groups. The ones who don't want to perform can help write ...

For This or That, you give them a choice between two things and they have to choose. So you might say, "Would you rather live in the city (point to the left side of the room) or the country (point to the right side of the room). And they go to the side that they prefer. It obviously works best in a larger ...

Triple Speak sounds fantastic and we will be trying it right away! We play a game called Experts, where they have to speak for 30 seconds on a random topic, with the goals being to sound like an expert, avoid happy feet and fidgeting, and avoid fillers like "um" and "uh". Triple Speak takes it to the ...

Dear Edwina is a wonderful piece for Middle School. It has lots of fun character opportunities, and featured moments for many actors. And it's a unit set, which feels like a luxury. You can expand the cast with neighborhood kids. It's also a really good one to invite your elementaries to come see. ...

We usually make a little money off our shows, but our big fundraiser is our summer camp. It's a lot of work for me upfront, but the week of camp itself is fun and we make between two and three thousand dollars. I pay for counselors to travel with the campers and they go to stations for art, acting, singing, ...

Dear Edwina, Jr really only requires one boy who can sing well. Most of the towns kids can be girls and/or girls dressed as boys. It has lots of nice featured moments for female singers. It's also a fantastic show to invite younger audiences to see. Once Upon a Mattress (G2K) requires a Prince, who doesn't ...

We took an adaptation of "The Day the Crayons Quit," the children's book by Drew Daywalt to our elementary schools a couple of years ago in the spring, and it was a big hit. We were even invited back to one school the following fall to perform it again, to kick off their schoolwide reading program. It ...

How exciting! What an amazing opportunity! It's not a musical, but The Mythology Olympiaganza is a very funny and easy to stage piece. It's through Playscripts, by Don Zolidis. ------------------------------ Dianne Rowe Theatre Arts Teacher Junior Thespian Troupe 88177 Berry Middle School ...

I'm shocked, and frankly, disappointed, that there hasn't been more in the news about the copyright issues around the recent production of "Alien." I mean, kudos to the students for pulling off what looked like a phenomenal show, but it sets a bad precedent. ------------------------------ Dianne ...
