Hello Hive Mind!

I'm looking for our spring play for next year.  Our theme will be "Legacy: What we leave behind".  Our musical is a little smaller, so looking at a potentially mid- to large-sized cast.  Like many of you, our female casting pool is larger than our males.

So, what shows do you like that focus on the idea of the things we pass on?  Annnnnnd.....GO!

Radium Girls might kinda/sorta fit in a mournful way. Also, maybe Our Town? Both can incorporate a large cast.

There is a wonderful show for two women, but can be expanded to 6. No males, though, that folllows three generations of women and what each pair leaves behind in the form of what their daughters do. The show is The Crimson Thread. Very challenging.

I highly recommend "Letters to Sala." It has opportunities for ensemble work and excellent material for a core group of strong females. The men's roles are relatively small but substantive. It provided some of the best acting experiences we've had in years. And our audiences loved it.

You may want to look at the RSC Arabian Nights by Dominic Cooke. Super-flexible cast (we put several girls in pants roles), and the end is really beautiful about how all the stories are collected and passed down through the generations.

A play that can have music or not and supports the idea of "Legacy: What we leave behind"  would be .Quilters.  Large or small cast mostly female,  The play mentions how a family's history can be traced in the quilts that are made and passed on.  You can even rent all of the quilts from the copyright holder (at least you use to be able to). It really focus on family and the daughters and what they add to the dynamics of the family.  It's funny, dramatic and real..

Hey, I'd give a huge second to Quilters, which I saw probably 25 years ago at ITF in Muncie. I saw the musical version. (It didn't occur to me that there was a non-musical one.)

My memory-Mr. Dugger please feel free to correct me-is that each song/scenelet represents an aspect of prairie life-and corresponds to a square in the quilt.  The final image of the play is the entire giant quilt being hoisted up:  an ending I found so moving that my shoulders started to shake.

As Stephen said the play is quite moving, and the final scene when the "completed" quilt is raised is inspiringly wonderful. There are also side stories from the sisters of the family and their take on quilting.

Some of the side stories add to the tapestry of the play and the story of the quilt.  

It is a really good piece of theatre.
