Favorite Theatre Quote?

I'm working on a project with a friend and I need some good theatre quotes. What's your favorite? I've always connected with one by Oscar Wilde, "I love acting - it is so much more real than life."

    Ginny,
I have attached a list of arts quotes that I have used for a variety of purposes, but some of my favorites I have listed below!

"Art is the only way to run away without leaving home." -  Twyla Tharp

"Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one." - Stella Adler

"The arts are an even better barometer of what is happening in our world than the stock market or the debates in congress." Hendrick Willem Van Loon

"To live a creative life, we must lose our fear of being wrong."  Joseph Chilton Pearce

"A play should make you understand something new. If it tells you what you already know, you leave it as ignorant as when you went in."
    - Our Country's Good, Act II, Scene 7

    All my best!

Here are a few that always resonate with actors and Theatre students, but which don't speak of "Theatre". " We create the present from the future against the backdrop of the past." "the creative adult is the child who has survived." "It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end." " It is the artist who is capable of being in uncertainties, mysteries, doubts, without any irritable reaching for facts and reason..." Keats "Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it." Edmund Burke "I hear and I forget I see and I remember I do and I understand". The Nuffield Math Project " Our roles in life change. Time is the great casting director.." "Ego is always thinking about what others are thinking of it." "Don't allow your past to kidnap your future." "Strength is not the absence of weakness, but how we wrestle with our weaknesses." "Ego is always thinking about what others are thinking of it." Noah benShea "The only journey worth taking is the journey within" "Basic science: Energy cannot be created or destroyed, just transformed". Every exit is an entrance somewhere else. Tom Stoppard

Choosing to be in the theatre was a way to put my roots down somewhere with other people. It was a way to choose a new family.   Juliette Binoche

Every now and then, when you're on stage, you hear the best sound a player can hear. It's a sound you can't get in movies or in television. It is the sound of a wonderful, deep silence that means you've hit them where they live.  Shelley Winters

My favorite is actually a letter written by Martha Graham to Agnes De Mille.  One of my acting teachers shared it with us during college and I've been meditating on it and sharing it ever since.

A Letter to Agnes De Mille

    There is a vitality,
    a life force,
    a quickening
that is translated through you into action,
and because there is only one of you in all time,
    this expression is unique.

And If you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and be lost.
The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine
    how good it is
    nor how valuable it is
nor how it compares with other expressions.

It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly
    to keep the channel open.
You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work.
You have to keep open and aware directly to the urges that motivate YOU.

    Keep the channel open...
    No artist is pleased...

There is no satisfaction whatever at anytime
There is only a queer, divine dissatisfaction
a blessed unrest that keeps us marching
and makes "us" MORE alive than the others.

    Martha Graham

Love that letter Elise. I could see that as a poster in every theatre classroom. It speaks volumes. Thanks for sharing. A very motivational way to start my day. Hope yours is awesome too.

I recite the Thespian motto, "Act well your part. There all the honor lies." a lot to myself. I've shared it with the kids too because it's relevant in every aspect of life and I'm a huge believer in living a life that's honorable in every way.

"The director is really like a ringmaster in a circus. You've got all these acts that are coming on. Some are naturally brilliant, some have learned their stuff and some are no good...You're not any more important than any one of those acts. But in order to get those great performances, you have to create an atmosphere where everyone fells completely free to contribute." Phillip Noyce, director of PATRIOT GAMES

Fan, upon meeting Michael Caine: "Oh, Mr. Caine. I love your work. I've always wanted to be an actor."
Caine: "No dear, what you want to be is rich and famous. If you wanted to be an actor, you'd be one."
(Attributed to Michael Caine, can't prove it)
