  • 1.  Kudos to the Behind the Scenes Tech Theatre Curriculum!

    Posted 11-13-2022 18:27

A few weeks ago Cory Wilkerson asked me if I'd like to participate in one of this year's projects, where professional designers would visit schools via Zoom and talk about what they do and how they do it. I immediately agreed, and Cory sent me the lesson plans for the Scenic Design module. I then began working with Cheryl Williams to finalize the schools and dates I would "visit."

And all I can say is "WOW!"

Although it is impossible to teach how to design sets in one week (most of us spend years in design school and then more years getting the hang of it in the real world), this lesson plan does a fantastic job of summarizing the main steps we use and getting the students actively involved. I was especially impressed that research is emphasized, as it is a very important step that is too often skipped under the guise of "we don't have enough time."

I was also pleased that flats (and scenery in general) were not mentioned. The lesson plan focuses on creating a set - an environment - instead of getting right into scenery: again, the way it's done in professional theatre.

We like to think that students are being taught school subjects the way they "are" in the real world: history as it really was, math and science as they really are, along with English, music, sports, and others. I think this program goes a long way not only to introduce theatre design (sets, lights, costumes, and sound) as it works in the professional world, but also to help students understand how it all fits together. And, for those that are not interested in acting or directing (which a lot of people aren't), it also introduces other areas of theatre that might just grab them.

So, to everyone who put this program together: a standing ovation!

    Hi there,

Is it possible to be involved in this Designer program? When would you be meeting, via Zoom?
I have about 10 young student designers who are ambitious and talented and it would be fantastic to have them involved in the project.

Please let me know more details.

    Thank you.

This sounds amazing!!! Is it recorded by any chance? Are the lesson plans available? I’m starting a Tech class next year and would love to look at this!

    Hi, Kent and Laura,

I'm not sure how to sign up for this, but you can reach out to Cory Wilkerson here at EdTA and she can give you all the information:

    Hey Kent and Laura,

In terms of signing up for the program Mr. Ledo is referring to, unfortunately that program of partnering with schools was a part of a pilot of a newly designed  tech theatre curriculum.  The project  launched several months ago and is just coming to a close.

The good news is that  the entire curriculum is available free of charge on the Learning Center, thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the arts.  You can download the curriculum here:

    Warmly,

    Hey Laura,

Thank you so much for your interest in Behind the Scenes.  Mr. Ledo is serving as one of our designers for the current pilot of the curriculum in rural school districts.  The lesson plans with links to designers whose work is available online may be found here:  https://learn.schooltheatre.org/behind-the-scenes-technical-theatre-curriculum

To support this year's pilot, we also hired Mr. Ledo along with 3 other designers to make supplemental classroom visits by Zoom.  Unfortunately these are only available to those schools in the pilot.  We will be taking what we learn from this pilot to make final tweaks and any needed edits, but the most recent versions of the curriculum may be downloaded here:  https://learn.schooltheatre.org/behind-the-scenes-technical-theatre-curriculum

Please feel free to download and use!  Based on what we are learning, we don't see any major changes between now and next school year, but if so the curriculum would automatically be revised at that link.

    George,
Thank you so much for your kind words- I'm so glad you are having a good experience!  I wanted to take a moment to thank the authors of the curriculum, in addition to myself and the amazing Cheryl Williams, Project Manager (and 2022 EdTA Founders Award winner).  The authors included professional designers from the Baltimore MD area and pre-service education, theatre, fashion and design majors from Morgan State.  Huge shout out to the team:
Authors: Cheryl Williams, Konrad Davis, Alexis Stevenson, Sharlene Clinton, Jessica Winfield, Martin Smith, James Gallmon, Milagros Ponce de Leon, Briyanna "Daisy" Rusley, Milan Scott, Keyinta Boyd, Cory Wilkerson
