I would be encouraged that teachers are using the tool in the classroom in an appropriate way as part of a larger discussion with regard to copyright, royalties, and original work; the need for playwrights to be compensated; for collaborative work; for research tools.
For example, a few weeks ago, we were putting together our annual halloween skit in class and a group of students were struggling to find a name for their skeleton character. We turned to ChatGPT to generate a list of names. The students choose "Bony Tony". A quick cursory look at Google and we discovered that Bony Tony was a name of a skeleton sold by Spirit Halloween. I think that is a good use of the tool as it helps one do research very quickly and to generate a group of ideas.

I use AI all the time to generate ideas, write short plays or scenarios and help students develop dialogue by coming up with starters. I think the important take away-- is that we use the tool to help us generate ideas and or improve our work product flow by having an extra set of hands so to speak. My student teacher used AI last year to write a short play that the students then costumed using trash. I thought it was great use of the tool.
I am hoping that the technology improves and some of the farming of intellectual property is addressed.

Greetings,
I'm teaching a 3-credit, totally online Canvas course, "Theatre Education Methods Course," for State Theatre Certification in the spring of 2024 at Utah Tech University. I want to add "AI" information to help make the life of a new theatre teacher easier. What do you think I should include? Thanks for your response and help! I'm an old dog trying to include some new tricks. contact: Russell.Saxton@utahtech.edu
Let's embrace the technology of tomorrow while cherishing the timeless art of theatre. π
