    Good morning,
Has anyone directed "Beauty and The Beast" using Steampunk costumes?

We did Midsummer using a steampunk set design and costuming. It was great fun for our costume crew. They created a lot of the costuming themselves because steampunk is pretty popular; they also knew where to shop locally.  They did a lot of thrift shopping, and we ordered some things on Amazon. They also contacted a local person who was an expert on steampunk. She came in and talked to the crews. I have a few drama students who dress steampunk every day. It was visually a great show and the audience loved it.

We did "Midsummer" steam punk and I projected "text" messages between scenes
that summarized or commented on the action. Kids had great fun writing them, creating the "phones", and dreaming up who was texting who!

I have not directed it that way, but years ago I had a student do the Costume Design Individual Event at the Colorado Thespian Conference with that concept. I didn't think it would work when she told me, but it did. It was steampunk apocolyptic.  The Beast had his face covered with a WWII style gas mask. Cogsworth was an automaton, etc.  It can work, aesthestically. Now, whether your audience will go for anything other than the expected Disney-ness is another matter.
