Bio

Ethan Mathias is an Indiana-based educator, director, and playwright who has spent his life in and around theatre. Over the course of his career as an educator, he has served as a director for over 40 full-scale productions, including vocal director for 10 musicals. As a teaching artist, his first full-length play, Provenance was selected for professional reading/development as part of the inaugural TheatreLAB Series at Actors Theatre of Indiana in 2019, and became a national semi-finalist for the 2022 O'Neill Theater Center's National Playwrights Conference.

He is a graduate of Ball State University, with a major in theatre and a minor in political science. At Ball State he directed and collaborated on several productions, including co-conceiver of Lovers, Liars, and Clowns (winner of the 2007 Ball State University Creativity + Innovation Award) and collaborated on The Human Faustus Project as part of a semester intensive at the Virginia Ball Center for Creative Inquiry led by award-winning playwright Jennifer Blackmer.

Currently, he directs and teaches at Hamilton Southeastern High School, where he serves as head of the drama program and teaches theatre arts, playwriting, dramatic literature, speech, and creative writing. In April 2022, HSE HS Thespian Troupe 520 premiered the high school adaptation of his play Provenance.  He lives in Fishers, IN with his wife, Devan.
