You only need build the base an inch higher than the pipe on the pump. One activity I did was to create a documentary crew. They took video and still pics from tryouts through the entire production process up to dress rehearsal making sure to focus on the crews. The documentary work was shown to the audience before a show opened. It was also a great way to educate the audience ...

I recommend buffet after your students seat guests. Have student servers get drinks. An MC can introduce background music during this time. When most folk are done then MC can start the show and ask servers to come to the stage "Let us entertain you" is great way to start a musical revue. Two prices ...
