For anyone who has done the show by Tim Kelly, how did you cast/handle the character of Louie Fan? (I guess it's a similar problem to Thoroughly Modern Millie.) I don't want to be insensitive, but I also recognize that it's a melodramatic murder mystery. ------------------------------ Annie Rice ...

I know it's been asked a million times, but I need suggestions for a play for our net season!  We already know we're doing 2 musicals (You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown and High School Musical), but I still want to do a straight show for my non-singers.  I've got a big pool to pull from, but most of them ...

Is there a one act version of 12 Angry Men?  (I couldn't find one with a cursory internet search.) If not, is there a one act that is similar to it?  I have a young man interested in directing something like that for our one act festival this year. ------------------------------ Annie Rice ...

We are trying something new and really exciting this year at school.  My ITS troupe is partnering with our school's chapter of Best Buddies to put on a play with a cast comprised of our general ed students and our students with special needs!  We are so excited to work on this, but I need help on where ...

I read a play with my advanced acting class every quarter.  We study themes, character, style, design, etc. In the past, we've read things like Oedipus, Doll's House, Macbeth, Tartuffe, Our Town, Long Day's Journey, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, and Everyman, A lot of the kids in this class ...

We've never done an in school paid performance, but when he did The Diary of Anne Frank last year, we invited our feeder school's entire 8th grade class to come see it during the school day.  They read it in their English classes the same semester we performed it, so it was a perfect extension activity ...

For someone who doesn't have a fly system or a catwalk, any ideas on how to make the kites in Mary Poppins appear as if they're flying? ------------------------------ Annie Rice Spring Hill TN ------------------------------

We only just recently closed our fall show and haven't auditioned for our spring musical yet, but I'm already starting to explore options for next fall.  I'm faced with an abnormal problem: I've got a lot of very talented guys but no true standout girls.  My girls are talented, but I won't have a star ...

I need your play knowledge! My most advanced class reads a play every quarter from a different historical period, analyzes the script, we discuss theme/characterization/etc, they research the acting/directing styles of that period, and then present scenes from the play.  I try to pick plays that appear ...

This year, I'm having my advanced students read 2 plays per quarter as outside reading.  We won't do anything with them in class (at least, as of now. . .those plans may change).  I'm giving them a list of 10 plays-they will choose a total of 8 to read.  My question to you: does anyone have a writing ...

While the Lights Were Out and Afraid of the Dark are both hilarious shows that can be played as straight or as ridiculous as you want!  Both are (I think) between 12-16 depending on how you chose to do some of the casting.  They both are also basic unit sets. Neil Simon's Rumors fits exactly what you're ...

Rehearsal for Murder sounds like a great option.  The set is a basic rehearsal space (we did it with a folding table and several folding chairs) with flashbacks to an apartment but you can absolutely keep that minimal as well.  I think the cast is right at 10 with easily accessible roles for high school ...

Get the book Great Acting Teachers and Their Methods.  Each chapter outlines a different acting teacher, their method, and outlines different activities you can do in your own classroom.   I've used it for several years; it's incredibly easy for students to understand! ------------------------------ ...

Mirrors (O'Brien) is fantastic!  There's basically no set and costuming is modern day.  It calls for 3m 3w, but one of the men can be played by a woman.  Dramatic Publishing carries it. ------------------------------ Annie Rice Spring Hill TN ------------------------------

I have a lot of underclassman talent coming up and would really like a show (almost solely) for them since I'm doing a small cast show in the early fall and most of them will probably miss out on it because of the upperclassman talent and experience.   I'd like a cast of around 15 (either balanced or ...

I know the director at Mill Creek Middle and Nolensville High in Williamson County is leaving at the end of this year.  Both schools are brand new, so she was split between both schools this year; I don't know if those will be separate positions next year or not (will depend on enrollment), nor do I ...

I have double cast several shows in the past, all in different ways, and have not regretted any of the casting decisions. In Sound of Music, we double cast ONLY Fredreich (it was down to 2 senior boys, both equally talented, both equally experienced). Since there was nothing separating them, we doubled ...
