And in re to Phillip's point, there was an absolutely brilliant all female production of Taming of the Shrew a few years ago in Sydney that generated a LOT of discussion (and would be great for student discussion) about gender roles. To see a female Petruchio deal physically with a female Kate...wowzers. ...

Oh, and there is a brilliant option to adapt Trojan Women--I had a drama class (all girls) adapt each scene and some used dance, and others music and others...but that might be an option, especially if you use it to explore the plight of women in various societies and cultures and then stage it accordingly. ...

I have some titles and books at school (I am currently sitting in our district wide kickoff in a large gym...don't judge) but one that I used at an all girls school was The Prom. I also adapted Comedy of Errors and used all females (with some playing males and some just genderless). ------------- ...

I had a similar situation last year where one of my Thespians was expelled from school for criminal charges. The home office wrote back to my query re removal and informed me that once a student is a Thespian, s/he remains one and cannot be removed. However, your constitution can have amendments to read ...

As a director, we have to take training in concussion and other related situations that may occur in our rehearsals. This is especially true if we are participating in any State Sanctioned activities, eg the competitive one act play contest. It is no doubt an insurance situation for the district. I find ...

One way to honor the licensing agreement as well as highlight its contemporary message is to have a suggested set rather than a realistic one. For example, use projections, have free standing window and door frames, etc. ------------------------------ Lori Constable Teacher; director of Drama Independent ...

Many in my building have started to pick up table and floor lamps at thrift shops; the ambient lighting is very warm and inviting. As well, another colleague has put up a ton of fairy lights on his ceiling to help with creating a more welcoming atmosphere. ------------------------------ Lori Constable ...

Re 'needed assignments'--does your state have fine arts (specifically drama) standards? It is important to honor those when creating assessments. Our district has aligned both our state (Minnesota) and the national standards to ensure the program is reputable and rigorous. Just a thought as you develop ...

I totally love the Manhattan Theatre Project's version. It was devised in the 1970s under the guidance of Andre Gregory (My Dinner with Andre fame). At the time, it spoke to the anti war and civil rights aspects going on in the world (but not overtly); since being in it myself in high school, I have ...

I used to teach Picnic... great story and production. Might be kinda heavy though. There is a play about prom night with all women--I just went to my library to try and find it (I know I have a copy) and then went online but my brain is dead (we started lessons this week). I will send a message to a ...

Oh, and I love Top Girls but depending on your community, there is a lot of heavy duty stuff in that... but it's fabulous. ------------------------------ Lori Constable Teacher; director of Drama Independent District 112 Chanhassen MN

I concur with the earlier post; you have enough on your plate so please focus on that. You have already thanked us and perhaps honoring your mother's wish for politeness and manners has been paid forward by you countless times with your work amongst your students. Best wishes to you all, ...

Hi Heidi, What is your zip code, please? Also, my students are putting things together for yours today: I have a box of books (scripts, monologues, texts) but we thought about sending some costumes. Do you have a production in mind so we can focus our search? Finally, what is the name ...

What terrible news! I hope that your students, their families, and your colleagues and their families are safe and well. I will be bringing this to the attention of our Thespian Troupe when classes start up in a week and make it a priority to put things together and send to you and your school. As someone ...

First of all, that's ridiculous to put that many into one course. I had a similar situation a couple of years ago and continue to have large class sizes/interest but am only allowed the one section. Secondly, kudos to you for wanting to do right by them. If the class is like my Intro class, you ...

Hi! You can't go wrong with the multiple sized drama blocks from Wenger. I have been teaching for 112 or so years and I've made them, bought various models (both here and overseas) and have found that the interlocking system is great. I have a basic set up: three huge ones, five medium, seven small and ...

We produced it three years ago; it was a great show for high school students/audiences. If your marketing can include snippets of songs on your announcements (we have video announcements) or in the cafeteria at lunch, the audiences of high school peers will see first hand how fun it is. And of course, ...

I agree with all of the suggestions here; having done these for nearly (gulp!) 30 years, the basics are: 1. Make certain the inductees feel honored; we invite parents and families and ask all to dress semi formal 2. We invite someone from the theatre community representing different areas ...

A hundred years ago when I was a sophomore in high school, we created out own full length mime production, using 'a kaleidoscope of mime' as a stimulus. We picked colors and people devised their own scenes and presented them for consideration. Our director did the whole group pieces and we created solo, ...
