"Song of Extinction" by EM Lewis (Samuel French) is a gorgeous play that engages science in its story. A mother dies of cancer, a father struggles to rescue a bug from extinction in the Bolivian rainforest, and a biology teacher, who is a survivor of the Khmer Rouge genocide, rescues their son. One of ...

For me the question is what level of mastery can I expect from beginning students in a limited time frame. I see students for 12 weeks. I consider mastery (3 level - meting standard)) to be that I can see some recognizable use of specific skills- objective and obstacle, physical and vocal characterization, ...

Along the lines of George’s recommendations, enlist the help of your industrial technology teachers and engage your administrators to create a plan that is safe for your students and meets the needs of your district/school board to control risk/liability. This is something that can be done so you can ...

Great question! We have tried to find a way to strive for both. My students are insistent, and I agree, that our fall production has a large cast to entice new participants, especially incoming freshmen. Our history shows that many students who don't get parts in that first fall show never come back. ...

Our students like to tackle challenging work so we produced "Bang Bang You're Dead" a number of years ago, more as a social services project than a theatre event.  We worked closely with our Guidance Counselors to be sure students were well supported throughout the production.  Per the requirements of ...

I had hoped to produce next year in a one act format, the play "The Skriker" by Caryl Churchill, but will not be permitted to cut it to one act length.  It is a creepy, nightmarish vision of a person struggling with and descending into mental illness that deconstructs language to show the descent into ...

Brian, Definitely get your students involved. Tech is another important way students learn about and experience the joy of theatre. Find every way you can to empower your students to give them ownership in the process and the product. I have my Stagecraft class design the sets and costumes for our shows, ...

Take a look at "The Rimers of Eldridge" by Lanford Wilson. It is edgy- it concerns a rape in a small town- but the language and structure are exquisite. The truth is presented in the disguised language of an unapproachable subject. It is not until the end that one realizes what has happened. Gorgeous!Rick ...

I contacted the author a few years back, who was very nice, but does not hold the rights to the script. He gave me a contact at Paramount Pictures, who refused to allow me to use their script to prepare a stage adaptation.Rick OsannBonny Eagle HSStandish, ME The information transmitted herein is intended ...

Hi Heather,We "tour" our Theatre 1 class to our elementary schools every term to perform a children's play that serves as a culminating summative assessment for the student work in class. We have a limited budget so we often use royalty-free scripts that are available from what are probably really old ...

Hi Sydney,We have about 1200 students with three sections of Stagecraft, one each term in a trimester schedule. Typically we have 20-25 students in each class. 20 is a very manageable number. 25 is more difficult. We focus much of our time on design, and then design/build the scenery/lighting/costumes ...

Carolyn,Here's another thought. In our district stipends are part of the Negotiated Agreement (teacher contract) between the board and the teacher's union. In addition to gaining board support, I need the support of the teacher's union to put the additional stipend request into their contract negotiations. ...
