Our troupe has about $250 for next year. So a royalty free play is needed. I have some students interested in doing Shakespeare. I have done a traditional Midsummer's Night before with a line modification for a blind student. This time I think I'd like to try 3 acts of different plays. I think I'd get ...

I'm feeling you. I have a floating cast of 6-12 (1200 total student population!). I have had to hold auditions to even see how many turn up BEFORE choosing a play. I started with 12 last year and 2 understudies. Lost 2, used the unders and lost another one. This year I started with 9 and landed two weeks ...

I would also , very close to their disrespectful little bodies, remind them that they can choose not to learn but not to impede others learning. They can sit quietly and not participate either in the room or in the office. Stand close to the worst one while instructing and monitoring, go old school and ...

You cast a physically and comically appropriate actor to the part. Nothing wrong there. He may be offended that the 2 roles (I am assuming back to back productions) were both servant roles. His perspective is also right based on the facts as he knows them. IMHO he may be unaware that casting plays is ...

Hi, I don't know the show. At all. As a parent I would have every right not to not let my kid try out or be in a play that I had issues with or that my kids had issues with. However, I would never insert myself into those decisions that belong to someone else. If she wants to not come, not support, ...

I am in SW Ohio. Any after school event, game, production MUST have at least one administrator present on the grounds. It is part of their duties. Our 1 principal and 3 assistant principals choose what they want then split the others. My principal comes from a dance/theater background so does all ours. ...

Hi Folks, Our HS building underwent a complete renovation over the past 2 years. Our new auditorium and stage are wonderful. However, in the transition ALL of our costumes got thrown away. Over 50+ years of collecting and thousands of pieces gone. Needless to say, we need to rebuild. As the song says, ...

Or aluminum foil over the cardboard. You could even joint them with duct tape and do a Tin-Man type armor for an extra. The head might be tricky - a flat mask rather than the dimensional one could be painted nicely. ------------------------------ Kati Heintzman Thespian Advisor Middletown City ...

Hi - I have a very small group of 13. Three are seniors and 2 of those are my only boys. So next year I will have 10 sophomores to work with, all girls, and very immature. We will have a newly renovated space and little in terms of funding. In the reno our entire room of costumes was tossed (insert ...

There is a show from a while back based on improv. I liked it then and kids can relate. It had numerous comedians and guest stars that the kids will still recognize. Who's line is it anyway? here's a youtube link. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=whose+line+is+it+anyway+full+episodes+ ...

It's kind of out there, but could you wrap a dancer in gray gauze and have them whirl around with small trailing pieces of gauze? Or if you have a fly system, hook some up and swish it back and forth? With the right sound effects, it could work. ------------------------------ Kati Heintzman Thespian ...

In Ohio if a student is in an online or homeschool program and their local public schools offers an activity or sport, they must be allowed to tryout or participate. If their local public school does not offer it, if the border districts have open enrollment agreements, they may accept those kids. The ...

I have done 2. A mixed up version of Jack and the Beanstalk (can't remember the real name, ack!) and Red v. the Wolf. Both were easy to produce, minimal staging, my HS kids loved performing them for the elementary schools and those kids eat it up. There are easy to use tricks for the sets and stuff. ...

Half Price Books usually has a nice selection. Flea Markets and other resale shops would also work. I have found interesting 45s and such at Goodwill and Salvation Army, as well. ------------------------------ Kati Heintzman Thespian Advisor Middletown City Schools Middletown OH

I did one many years ago. Christmas season so we did dinner, a version of the Velveteen Rabbit, intermission and dessert, then Gift of the Magi. Dinner was lasagna, salad, and bread. Dessert was cheesecakes and coffee/tea. All this was done through the cafeteria and the lunch ladies volunteered so we ...

A couple of things come to mind for me. One, you can begin to include your local junior high schools or adjacent local schools when casting a bigger show than what you can supply kids for (cast a wider net). Two, you can go back and change shows. Not ideal if you've committed money or advertising already ...
