Dear Ed Theatre Community, After twenty happy years I am retiring this spring as theatre and music teacher at the marvelous Bay Ridge Prep School in Brooklyn, NY. The search is on for my replacement and the attached link to the job posting is here for you to share or consider. Thank you, Patti Veconi ...

Looks like I’m going to be teaching theatre to 3rd and 4th grades this year in the socially-distanced classroom. Kids will wear masks and I will have a face shield so they can see my expressions…yikes. I’ve taught theatre to middle school for many years and I’ve taught music to lower school for 20 years ...

Drew - this is brilliant! You (or said teacher) could also include ethnodrama and drama research into the project by having the producers interview their subjects. Some cross-curric collaboration possibilities too (which administrations love). Thank you for sharing this very creative project idea.

Radio plays! My 8th graders wrote and produced four this spring using Soundtrap. It was a lot of fun and I'll be expanding that unit/project with my next group in the fall. ------------------------------ Patti Veconi Brooklyn NY ------------------------------

Yes to this! I learned at my faculty meeting yesterday that our auditorium will be a classroom because it's one of the two largest rooms in our small school. No surprise, but still hard to hear. All of us in the arts will also be teaching all of the middle school in a rotation of arts next year, rather ...

Actually, I now remember that only one of the two women in "The Children's Hour" is a lesbian. ------------------------------ Patti Veconi Brooklyn NY ------------------------------

I second "Stop Kiss" and also recommend "The Children's Hour" for an older work. ------------------------------ Patti Veconi Brooklyn NY ------------------------------

That’s an awesome idea. I was thinking of having them take pics of each other and then blowing them up and tracing on a light board, but this app sounds easier/better. I’ll check it out.

I'm starting a unit on stage make-up for the first time and am having a hard time finding a good face template for the students to use for design ideas. Ideally, a few to choose from so everyone feels they have a template that is close to their gender, face shape and features. Does anyone have one (some) ...

Help! I have promised my middle schoolers a musical this year and we have to keep it in the 75-90 minute range because of how much rehearsal time we get between sports seasons. I like this show called “Surf’s Up” by Craig Sodaro, because of the setting, theme and Beach Boys style music. BUT, I’m struggling ...

This year, I changed my first semester 8th grade drama class from “Production” - in which we would spent the term preparing an original devised play - to “Performance Practices” for which I’m excited to be doing a bunch of units I never get to because we always using classes to produce shows. The result ...

I’m a Brooklynite and am so excited the conference will be here. More than anything, I’m looking forward to meeting more theatre educators and building out my network. But I also really appreciate that this is so early in the school year so I can implement all the great new material I get from the conference ...

I usually start in silence doing a series of simple actions that the class does with me until we are all working together in simultaneous movement. This leads to a quick conversation about the power of ensemble and communication and the line between performer and audience. The stakes are low but powerful. ...

Great list started with this stream! I would also add Lazy Bee Scripts from the UK. They have an excellent search engine and you can read all of their shows in their entirety online before purchasing. I have done several of their shows. http://www.lazybeescripts.co.uk/ ------------------------------ ...

I did “Captain Bree and Her Lady Pirates” with a girl-heavy class a few years ago. There is both a one-hour and full-length version. It's lesser known but a single set with lots of opportunity for visual play. Good luck!

Dear Hive Mind, our troupe is brand new and my eight initiates are considering a community service project for this first year and I'm wondering if any of you have suggestions. TOTS eats (am I saying that right?) is Halloween centered and already past, so we're looking for some ideas that maybe other ...

Look at Captain Bree and Her Lady Pirates, or The Lady Pirates of Captain Bree with Pioneer. I did the one hour version a couple years ago and the girls carry most (maybe all) of the solos. It's a really well-written little gem. ------------------------------ Patti Veconi Brooklyn NY --------- ...
