Brett, there is a fantastic book written by former Royal Shakespeare Company actor Michael Pennington. Here’s the link to the book on Amazon. It is so full of amazing information. I used it the first time I directed the show and it was a huge huge help. https://www.amazon.com/Midsummer-Nights-D ...

We did like another poster said:  Had the actor stand on a chair and then put the noose around her neck.  She stood there as Wargrave went offstage.  She was back and top lit, no front or side light.  The gunshot goes and she drops the figure in silhouette. The key safety factor is in the noose knot ...

For sound design, I love and recommend ProTools.  They now have a free version, ProTools First, that will allow multi-track audio editing.  It is perfect for sound design and the basics are pretty easy to learn. Pro Tools | First - Free Music Software - Avid There are also a ton of online resources ...

I did 39 Steps two years ago and never paid that much. It was more along the lines of 100$ / show. That being said, I perform in a very intimate venue, seats 250 and my ticket prices are 8$. License fees are based on seat count and ticket price, at least partly. In my smaller venue my fees are never ...

This is weird for me to say, because I am such an advocate for classic text, but I would recommend the student not do it, at least at the original audition.  The guidelines say no classic material for the audition, I would stick to that or the student run the risk of being labeled as one who does not ...

I just dealt with this. And while it is a tough decision to have to make, I cut a kid from the show on opening night for not meeting the agreed upon commitments. I had another student go on, script in hand. These are school productions, and while we work our butts off to have amazing shows, the process ...

I used EF Tours and did "Curtain Time".  We just did it over spring break.  It was an amazing experience for all of my kids.  We saw 3 West End show (a few saw more).  We had two acting workshops.  We toured The Globe, The Tower of London, Windsor Castle, and had enough free time that we got to tour ...

I am looking at ITF registrations and on the fees page there is a fee listed for $120 for a single day, but when I am in the registration site, there is no option for this that I see.   Does anyone know is this not a thing anymore, or is it only paid in Lincoln? ------------------------------ ...

I hire a pianist for our musical each year. He rehearsed with the pit for about 4 or 5 weeks (about 10 hours a week) and performs in out 3 shows. All in all here is here about 60 hours. I pay him 1700 for this work. That comes to about 28 an hour. I think that is completely reasonable. ---------- ...

I second Paul Meier.  I exclusively use his process when teaching dialects and accents.  I was fortunate to have him as a professor in college.  He is absolutely fantastic! He has RP and Cockney books, which are the two you will need for My Fair Lady, on his website.  He uses several techniques, visual ...

I like to keep my main stage shows super competitive. For our main stage musicals I cast right around whatever was the original cast size. Last year for Kiss Me Kate we had 30, this year for All Shook Up, I am looking to cast 24 or so. We do 11-13 shows a year so kids have opportunity to do shows. ...

I actually just got back from a meeting about this where we talked to an entertainment lawyer about how this works.   If you buy sheet music it usually comes with a blanket performance license that says as long as you purchase music for each singer you can perform the piece.  You are limited somewhat ...

I will PM you as well, but this is good info that more people may need.   I would start by contacting David Sterritt.  He is the Southeast Region Rep for the Society of American Fight Directors.  This is the largest group in the USA that trains and certifies stage combat.  (full disclosure: I am a ...

We are doing One Man, Two Guvnors and the script calls for a "working fire extinguisher" to be used on a cast member.  In the National Theatre production, they some sort of high expansion foam from a refillable water fire extinguisher.  It was about as thick as shaving foam or whipped cream.  Any ideas ...

My school is very interesting.  We do a lot of shows here.  This coming year we are doing 13 shows. 3 MainStage shows (2 plays and a musical),  6 Repertory Theatre shows (5 plays and 1 musical), and 4 improv shows. MainStage: The school gives me $500 for each MainStage play and $4000 for the MainStage ...

As a writer and composer, I have always been a strong supporter of copyright.  I just finished my first year as the solo theatre teacher of a rather large program and we had an interesting copyright story this last year.. When my students do sound designs for show, I required that all cues are either ...
