I love Gideon's Knot--the whole play is between two women--a teacher and parent meeting after the suicide of the parent's son. Also, a fantastic scene in Lauren Gunderson's Emile and several great ones in her play Silent Sky. ------------------------------ Joyce Thrift Theater Teacher Antioch ...

There are some great suggestions already on the thread, but I was thinking of Everything I Needed to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. It can be done either as a musical or play. Some great parts, all in small sections. ------------------------------ Joyce Thrift Theater Teacher Antioch CA ---- ...

If I had my way, I would have each year add a Documentary theater play. I think the kids love post-modern stuff that deals with issues that are current and raw. Anna Devere Smith's Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 or Fires in the Mirror to touch on race relations. Laramie Project to look at LGBT issues, The ...

I like Home on the Mornin' Train which is about a group of German Jewish children hiding in a barn from the Nazi's, reading about African-American children in the US escaping slavery. It uses some great old folk songs. I also love Everything I Needed to know I Learned in Kindergarten--it's a night of ...

I like to do newer works with my students. I love Mary Zimmerman's plays--I'm doing Metamorphoses right now (and it's a huge hit,) but if you don't want to deal with the water The Arabian Nights is also great. I also admire Anna Deavere-Smith's work--I did Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992 a few years ago ...

You have some terrific advice here. I would add that I use teen scene books for my middle school classes--Acting Natural by Peg Kehret or Short Scenes and Monologues for Middle School Actors by Mary Hall Surface are two good examples. The best scenes from your classes and easily be made into a play. ...
