I know you said modern.  But....a very "modern" play that isn't is An Enemy of the People by Ibsen.  It deals with modern issues of pollution, business vs. science, mob rule, the promise of jobs when there is no promise, and one person standing alone with the truth and willing to suffer consequences.   ...

Leading Ladies requires two strong male leads. If you have them, great. Since you are a first year, I would look more toward an ensemble piece like maybe Almost Maine, Night of Jan 16th or Anatomy of Grey (my personal favorite) where you can concentrate on acting and getting to know the students.
