Hi Joseph, There are a series of plays by the Spanish poet/playwright Federico Garcia Lorca that may fit the bill. Several years ago my advance drama students and the advanced Spanish Language students combined their talents to perform several of his plays in our Little Theatre.  We did  "Blood Wedding,"  ...

Hi Joyce, You might check out 'Back Stage' an industry mag/newspaper that comes out once a week. It contains news, auditions and advertising for classes. It's available at most good news stands or you can find an online version on their website. I'm not sure of the cost or the access to the online version, ...

Hi Claire, The play "Almost Maine" might be a good choice for your group. The play has multiple scenes that offer a varied content from comedy to drama, from new paths to missed opportunities. One actor/actress can play many roles, and some characters can be male or female. You might take a look at ...

Hi Susan, If you need the blood to appear on stage, you can make a small blood packet from a plastic bag that you can heat seal then puncture with a needle or lancet. You can also anoint her hands off stage. -- Mack Dugger TeacherDepartment of Teaching and LearningPacific Avenue Education Center440 ...

Dear Kristen, I had a very similar incident involving the play Brighton Beach Memoirs. We were ten days from opening when an edict came down from the district administration that the scene where the brothers talk about masturbation must be cut. This was not possible because of the contract we had with ...

Hi Shanda, There are some great rental houses where you could probably rent a sky blue drape or painted drop. When we did You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown, we used a black drape for the background. Using colorful set pieces and costumes would accent the comic nature of the look. Check on-line and see ...

I agree with Mark. If the student is the director, I move to an advisory capacity, but only then. They tend to want to cast their friends, or not cast someone they don't like (for what ever reason). They tend to not look at the overall picture of the piece. Not a good idea. Mack -- Mack Dugger TeacherDepartment ...

Hi Karen, I like the idea of an outsider helping to cast the show. You can give the students the experience of a "real world" audition by having the students sign up and get a time. Then don't you be in the room during the audition. (of course as a teacher you need to be present, perhaps another teacher ...

Hi Theresa, Rose Brand is always a good choice when dealing with curtains or backdrops.  Another choice is Blacksheep  Enterprises.  They are located in Southern California, however, they do excellent work and install as well.  You can give Zachery a call at 818-909-2299 or email at zac@blacksheepent.net.  ...

Hi Jordan, The play "Nuts" (or nutz)  has a really killer monologue for a woman and you might also look at "The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in The Moon Marigolds" If you're looking for a classic piece the Lady M speech from MacBeth. I hope this helps, Mack ------------------------------ ...

Hi Betsie, We did The Foreigner a number of years ago and it went off without a hitch.  However, with the current feelings running through the country, I would give the principal a copy of the script and set a time to discuss the play with them.  In the production I reminded the students that a character ...

Two questions I would ask: 1. What is your greatest weakness.? 2. What is your greatest strength? These will give you an idea of how honest they are with themselves.  I have found the answers to these questions to be quite enlightening. Best, Mack ------------------------------ Mack ...

Hi Jana, There is a cute musical out there called "Androcles and The Lion," It's done in the style of commedia dell'arte, and can be done with or without the musical numbers. The cast can be augmented with a chorus that will also adjust the set, play other animals, act as part of the set, etc. It even ...

Hi Jolaine, You've got some great choices there. You might also take a look at "The Laramie Project," "How I Survive High School," for advanced "Waiting for Godot." A good comedic script "Jake's Women<" and a bit of the absurd "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead." Good Luck with the projects. Best, ...

Darlene, About attaching the masonite to the floor-- to correct my previous email--We used 1 5/8" dry wall screws. We pre-drilled the sheets of masonite and counter sunk every screw. I left out a rather important part of the process. Everything else is good to go. Mack On Fri, Oct 4, 2019 at 8:31 ...

Hi Darlene, Here is what I would recommend. If the plywood is good and solid, leave it in place. If not replace it with finished 3/4 inch plywood. On top of that add double tempered masonite, making sure to leave a small space between sheets (we used pennies to provide the space) Attach the masonite ...

Hi Jessica, I think that would be an outstanding idea!! It could have the added benefit of helping the audience follow the story (not that it's difficult). As Bill Murry would say, "I love this idea. Hi Shira, I have also used the eartec system and it has worked for us. However, my crew and I prefer the ear cup (over the ear) style of headset as opposed to the floating on the ear. It makes the commands easier to hear and improves soft speech. Best, Mack -- Mack Dugger TeacherDepartment of ...

Hi Donnie -  We did a show a few years back called "Shakespeare in Hollywood" authored by Ken Ludwig. Basically, it's about Oberon and Puck leaving the palace in Athens for the forest when Puck makes a wrong turn, and they end up in Hollywood on the set of the 1935 movie "A Midsummer Nights Dream."  ...
