I did not get my money back from Grease until I got the district involved. It was a long, painful process, and I got stonewalled repeatedly until the district contacted them. I gave the district the contract with the relevant parts highlighted, and forwarded them all my email communications, and dates ...

I've been pre-occupied, to say the least, but it just occurred to me today that I never received a refund for the rights to Grease which I canceled on March 10. I got an email two weeks later saying they would contact me soon, and I've received nothing. Anybody else in the same boat? ------------ ...

Rosemary, would it be better to just cancel, and reapply for rights when the dates are set for next year's shows, or file to move the dates of an already licensed show? (Too late for me; I canceled). ------------------------------ Jeff Johnson Director of Theatre Arts Del Oro High School Loomis ...

Same thing here. I did not get any complaints about the black eye, the broken arm, the name-calling, the violence. Nobody complained about the violence against Audrey. The only complaint I got was that Oren says, "Jesus Christ" while he does it. People. ------------------------------ Jeff Johnson ...

Same boat. Over a month of nothing. No response to a phone call. Auto Response from both the original contact, and from Rosemary. If I don't hear by Wednesday, I have to pull the plug on Grease. The kids will be crushed, but we have to get started on our show. In contrast, I picked a back up show ...

We just did a show called "Vintage Hitchcock: A Radio Play." It's set in a radio studio, and in it, the actors generated all the sound effects on stage. We got most of them by searching use the sound effect we want, plus the terms "Sound effects" or "foley." We found several sites and videos on youtube ...

I have a student who has developed an interest in studying puppetry in college, and I have no idea where to direct him. Does anybody know of good post-secondary puppetry programs? ------------------------------ Jeff Johnson Director of Theatre Arts Del Oro High School Loomis CA ------------- ...

I think you did the right thing, too. And I agree that you shouldn't refer to it as a punishment. Stick to the simple truth. There are protocols for how this works, and the mentors know what those are. A mentor cannot just rewrite the protocols because she thinks she has a better idea. That isn't ...

While weekend workshops can be great, I recommend something more intensive. When I started my program, I had experience as an amateur actor, and nothing else. I figured a lot of stuff out as I went along, but the turning point for my program was when I joined the Master of Theatre Studies and Design ...

Death of a Salesman. I don't think there are many kids who can pull off Willy Loman. I waited years for an actor who could convey the burden of Years, and when I finally had a kid who could pull it off, everyone talked me out of the play because it is too serious, and I missed my chance. I regret ...

I suffered for years with a similar schedule, and just about collapsed. My teaching suffered, my productions suffered, my home life suffered. It was no good. I convinced admin to let me bring in an assistant, and the school and I pay her a stipend (50/50) based on the schedule the district has for ...

You Can't Take It With You is a classic. It's very funny, has a bunch of male and female roles, and the best thing is that every single character is fun to play. Everyone will have fun doing it. ------------------------------ Jeff Johnson Director of Theatre Arts Del Oro High School Loomis CA ...

We used Orch Extra when we did it. We had a string quartet and a keyboard, and fleshed out the rest with Orch Extra. It costs about $1,500, but it's a great program that you can use to edit the music to your needs. It's best used to supplement live music, but I think you could do an entire show with ...
