Two comedies we had great success with were Meet Me In St. Louis and Pride and Prejudice. St. Louis provides some great physical comedy and classic comedy lines, while the humor in Prejudice doesn't really come out until performance - I remember my kids were so surprised at all the laughter during the ...

From my experience, your students are the best source for a script like this. I had my students write out a story (or tell a story) about a personal experience. Then, in small groups, the students acted these stories out. One of the only rules was that they couldn't use real names. We did a number of ...

What about The Imaginary Invalid? The lead is male, but some fun secondary female parts and lots of physical comedy. ------------------------------ Kristie Bach (Retired Theatre Teacher) Purple Plays Publishing Traverse City, MI www.purpleplays.com

One of the best recruiting tools I had was having the elementary and middle school kids come to my performances at the high school. I started the program from nothing and after about 10 years had so many classes that I was a full time theatre teacher (of majority of my students had come to see our plays ...

We did "The Mysterious Case of the Missing Ring" (Pioneer Drama, I think) and the kids loved it. I don't remember how many parts there were, but I had a class of 34 students and we cast everyone (I did double cast some parts). ------------------------------ Kristie Bach (Retired Theatre Teacher) ...

After teaching theatre for almost 25 years, I have had plenty of shows that I was tempted to cancel, but each and every time the kids pulled through. In an attempt to give as many kids as possible opportunities, I always double cast the major (and sometimes the medium-sized) parts. This is also works ...

I retired in June, so my information is fairly current for our district. Here is what our district has "listed" as stipend amounts for production related positions: Thespian Sponsor - 2% of base salary (1st year teacher) Theatre Director - 3% of base salary per production Musical Director ...

I was paid 2% on the step 1 salary schedule and then each year I continued in the position the salary went up a step. So, even though I had been teaching 7 years when I started as the thespian advisor, the 2% was figured on a first year teacher's salary, the next year the 2% was figured on a 2nd year ...

I'm not sure how large of a cast you are looking for, but before I retired, our advanced theatre class had to have a play every year that would accommodate 22-35 students (with at least 12 females). Most of the time I would double cast all major roles and then use the off-night leads as extras. Here ...

Not sure what kind of a show you are looking for, but we did Alice's Return to Wonderland last spring and it covered a lot of bases - lots of parts for either gender, fun for teenagers, but appropriate for children. ------------------------------ Kristie Bach Retired Theatre Teacher Traverse City ...

All of my shows were student run, from the smallest one act to the advanced theatre productions so that description can mean different things to different people. Whenever a show is done for an audience, the royalty has to be paid. The one show we did that did not require a royalty was "The Laramie Project." ...

I just now saw this so I am a bit late weighing in. I hope you let us know how your meeting went. For all the reasons stated by others who have written in response to your posting, I hope you do not cancel your one act competition plans. I was in the same situation last year. We had plans to produce ...

I can't think of a production where I didn't double cast whenever possible. The pros (for me) far outweighed the cons: 1.If one student misses a rehearsal, rehearsal can still go on 2. Students grow by watching others perform the same part (even if interpretations are different). I always stressed ...

We used ZFX twice - once for Dracula and once for A Midsummer Night's Dream - and both times we had great experiences. Our school's risk management also freaked out the first time we signed them up, but soon realized that the extensive training and rehearsal required by ZFX was pretty thorough. AND that ...

I also had to build a costume shop from scratch a number of years ago. I made the mistake of not asking for specific items and ended up with several garbage bags full of things I could not use. Here are some things I have found useful for most fairy tale and Victorian period things we've done. For ...

I agree that the community theatre might be a huge help. Those people are used to building stage sets. Home Depot and Lowe's are awesome, but sometimes building a set doesn't require the kind of heavy duty construction that traditional "construction" people are used to. The stairs for Teddy obviously ...
