About a million years ago (it seems) we "melted" the witch out of her castle by sliding her down a ramp. As she was "melting," she sand to her knees then her front as she slid down toward the wing. She lifted her hands to her head and nudged her hat off and slithered through the curtain. We had 2 4 x ...

I did Oz about 18 years ago, and we used my miniature Schnauzer as Toto. He was on a leash the whole time and worked well with both Dorothys and the Scarecrow. He had two handlers offstage when he wasn't on, and he made his exit from the witch's castle all by himself, responding to a call for a new cookie ...

We also did Charlotte's Web this past fall, and took a different view of the animal costumes. Charlotte wore black spider tights, a black long-sleeved turtleneck leotard and spider gloves. We made her "shell" and legs from a string backpack stuffed with nylon net pouf balls (like you'd make for a wedding ...

Heidi--I can't imagine the loss and grief. But, in the words of Irving Berlin, "there's no people like show people." I've been reading the posts and realize you will be getting a lot. Troupe 7620 in Monongahela, PA is kicking in too, as well as our band and chorus departments. In fact, we are getting ...

I did this show several years ago and we loved it! We made a huge peach backdrop and a brown multi-level "pit" that the insects lived in. Because they are inside the peach, the movement is somewhat limited, but we had a blast! The growing peach was done with a spotlight and a peach gel. Break a leg!

When I left my position in Virginia Beach after 15 years to move back home to Pennsylvania, I read the students the good-bye section from The Little Prince. I was moving to an area they couldn't see on the map, so the Prince's return to his tiny planet was appropriate. I gave them tiny stars with bells ...

I couldn't have said it better, Ken! After 25 years, I hear from students in all walks of life (only a handful pursued theatre as a profession) and they tell me what they learned in their theatre classes--from rag-rolling a wall to working with absolutely everyone they encounter to doing what needs to ...

We used a balsa wood scale model that was able to be rebuilt each day. It barely lasted the run, but it worked and collapsed beautifully. The lines don't say that Dino is full sized....

The first place I would look would be their English class canon. If a play or novel is in that curriculum then it would be appropriate for the age group, the students can see how an English class approaches a script differently than a Theatre class might or how a novel is translated into a viable script, ...

I also have a group with a large number of special needs students. One of the best plans I did this year was a Silent Movie performance--that I am pretty sure I stole from someone on this forum! I showed the class a Buster Keaton film so everyone understood the style and format, gave them titles to work ...

We did Harvey about ten years ago--I'm pretty sure we didn't edit or cut. That said, the kids had a hard time getting the characters and the subtlety needed for the show to work well. They love to watch the film, but it was a struggle to get characters not caricatures.

Seussical is fantastic performed! We allowed our students to create their own Whoville costumes within color context, built a 7 foot sliding board for the Wickershams and gennerally had a wonderful time with it! It is a vibrantly visual show with a ton of kids involved, all of whom the elementary students ...

A third of the population in one of my classes comes from our Life Skills class. For scene work, I've done a couple of different things: First, we do use a lot of fairy tales--Snow White is terrific, especially for our non-verbal students since Dopey doesn't speak at all and Sneezy and Sleepy can get ...

"Marry the Man Today" from Guys and Dolls; "A Boy Like That/I Have A Love" from West Side Story. There's also a good one from Footloose with Ariel and Ren's moms, but I don't remember the song title. ------------------------------ Leslie Weinstein Monongahela PA ------------------------------ ...

Two weeks ago, after working for months on a showcase of A Midsummer Night's Dream, we had a water main break that affected the school and everything--including the performance of the show that night--was cancelled or postponed to the next day. On the new night, I lost Bottom, Helena, Hermia and Flute ...

It's been years, but we mounted the pump to two 2x4 that were the top of a box painted to look like stone or brick. The box covered a 5 gallon bucket and a pipe extended down from the pump into the bucket. We filled the bucket with water--I think we had to play around with the levels somewhat to make ...

I did Harvey about 10 years ago. My students loved it, and it was somewhat of a box office success. It is relatively easy, technically--fishing line is wonderful!--so the cost factor was pretty low vs. the name recognition. One advantage is that I'm located pretty close to Indiana, PA, and the Jimmy ...
