Yes. I wanted to meet with him and talk about it but my vocal director who is a teacher (I am a contractor) said to wait til he approached me.  I should have met with the student prior. But our meeting did go well and there will be some things I'll do now regarding casting and making myself more readily ...

Yes.  The meeting went well. I'm well aware of the problem in casting him in a servant role. Based on his skills it was all I could offer him. Sadly we only had two black kids audition. One of the things we talked about was how we could get more kids of color interested in theater. But that's another ...

Thank you everyone!  These comments just confirm my approach to this issue. What's really interesting is that I asked all the kids atbcall backs if there was a role they were not interested in playing. The young man did not speak up.  And i I do recognize the issue with the role for him.  I just wanted ...

I am doing The Addams Family for our fall musical. I cast the tallest boy with the lowest voice and great comic timing as Lurch. He is also black. He finds the casting of Lurch inappropriate. I have a meeting tomorrow with the Principal, the young man and our Activities Director. I admit I'm at a loss ...

I have.  I used townspeople in the house in the first scene.  They had heard what was happening and were there for comfort or just nosy.  And extra girls as well.   They were also bystanders in the arrests.  I also used them in the court scenes as extras. And they watched the hanging.  I ...

Funny no one has suggested the Jeffery Hatcher adaptation of Gogol's The Government Inspector.  One of the funniest plays ever!!  Large cast and flexible.  I've done it twice!  The full length and with permission as a one act for competition. ------------------------------ Marcie Berglund Washington ...

Look at The Glass Slipper published by Pioneer. I did it at high school level. Added preshow with cat and mice and cool dance music for ball. Also used Commedia as my acting inspiration. It was very successful and fun. ------------------------------ Marcie Berglund Play Coach (Musical and One Act) ...

We just did Still Life with Iris for our spring play. I highly recommend it for high school. It is a gem. A couple years ago we did The Glass Slipper (Pioneer) and used commedia del Arte as our inspiration for performance. Stage was raked with four doors up stage that pivoted and simple props. We added ...

We did Millie this fall. When we picked it I was concerned about the portrayals of Asians and I read Scanlons suggestions and agreed. I was fortuneate enough to have Asian kids audition and they got the roles and were amazing. I always asked them if they were okay with the direction and even in costuming ...
