  • 1.  Summer Theater seminars for HS students

What are the summer theater programs you recommend to your students? I have two students who want to major in acting in college - and they're both very talented. I'd love to suggest a few great programs that will really inspire them and hone their skills. We're in Los Angeles area, but I think they'd both be open to traveling.

    Thanks!

My summers at California State Summer School for the Arts (https://www.csssa.ca.gov/) were life-changing.  This is a prestigious, Governor's-school type program where students who are accepted are designated as California Arts Scholars.  It is very training and process-based vs. many summer programs that focus on producing a play. The students are from diverse backgrounds all around the state and they have the opportunity to meet, live with and create art artists of all disciplines.  It looks good on a college resume and students receive college credit through the CSU system.  It has changed a little in the past 20 years since I attended, but the essence of the program is the same.

If they are open to travel, my son has gone to Broadway Artist Alliance for the past 2 summers. I also have students that have gone. They’ve had great experiences. Last summer they even helped my son get an internship with a costume designer. He was in camp until 5 and then went to her workshop. It was been great for networking and making those important connections in the business.

Here is a list I've come up with, with input from fellow teachers:

    USC Summer Theater Institute
    https://summerprograms.usc.edu/programs/4-week/acting/

UCLA Acting and Performance Summer Institute
    https://www.summer.ucla.edu/institutes/ActingandPerformance

    National High School Institute
    Northwestern University's Evanston campus
Northwestern's Cherubs program is, and has been, excellent forever:

    Berridge Programs in Normandy, France
For students who might benefit from a really warm, loving, but also excellent environment, AND one in France, many students have had life-changing, confidence building experiences at this program:

    MPulse Summer Performing Arts Institute
    Ann Arbor, Michigan

For musical theater, MPulse at Michigan is excellent, but very selective.

    Carnegie Mellon Pre-College Theater Conservatory
    https://admission.enrollment.cmu.edu/pages/pre-college-drama
    Carnegie Mellon runs excellent programs
