  • 1.  Search for Large Cast Play

    Hey all!

I am looking for a large ensemble cast show for next fall. Ideally, I would like to have a show that isn't too dated and something the kids can really delve into. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

We had a blast with The Greek Mythology Olympiaganza by Don Zolidis...he has many choices, though. Check out his website! Break a leg!

I'm not sure how large of a cast you are looking for, but before I retired, our advanced theatre class had to have a play every year that would accommodate 22-35 students (with at least 12 females). Most of the time I would double cast all major roles and then use the off-night leads as extras. Here are some plays that we did that were fun and we learned a lot from:

Antigone (I think it was the Pioneer Drama version), Anne Frank and Me, Pride and Prejudice (no extras in this), A Tale of Two Cities (Dramatic Pub), Macbeth (again, I think it was either Pioneer or Dramatic Pub), Dino (Dramatic Pub), A Midsummer Night's Dream, Dracula, The Three Musketeers, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, The Map Reader, and Sweeney Todd.

    Good luck!

The Birds by Don Zolidis is great (Playscripts) as is his adaptation of The Frogs (Dramtists?).

Radium Girls by DW Gregory (30+ parts, based on true historical events of women who worked with radium in a watch factory)

Sleepy Hollow, there are multiple versions

You Can't Take it With You by Moss and Hart (16-20 parts)

Rosie the Riveter (through Eldridge, 21+ parts)

Anatomy of Gray by Jim Leonard (9 parts, but add an ensemble of townspeople)

Robin Hood, there are multiple versions (even consider doing it gender-switched!)

The Witches by David Wood, Roald Dahl (10 parts, but add an ensemble)

Treasure Island by Ken Ludwig (11 parts, add a pirate ensemble)

We had a very profitable evening that we called A Night in Narnia: The Magician's Nephew and The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. We used a single set. The only actor that was in both for us was Aslan.

    Midsummer/Jersey-Ken Ludwig

    A Midsummer Night's Dream

    The Skin of our Teeth

    The Crucible

    Playing for Time

These all have a good size cast and are challenging.   The first one is a modern comedic take on Jersey Shore and Midsummer Night's Dream.  .
