Looking for a 8-12 member cast of a Comedy of Manners or Farce.  Have done Earnest in the past and would love to do it again, but don't presently have a Jack or Algie.  Would love to close next year with a funny, physical show.

If you like Wilde, you might try "An Ideal Husband." It is just as clever and has a couple magnificent female roles.

Moliere's "Tartuffe" is also great fun, and has opportunities for some great physical comedy.

For farce, consider "Sauce for the Goose" by Feydeau. Lots of laughs if done well, and while the content (infidelity) could easily be done in an inappropriate way, it's still a very accessible script for student performers and audience.

1991 Freyda Thomas translation of Moliere's Learned Ladies
    6 W, 4 M
The Broadway production was done in modern dress, but we set it in Moliere's time. It was a great learning experience. She takes all the best from Moliere, modernizes the language, and shortens the speeches.

There is the classic Feydeau farce: A FLEA IN HER EAR. There are a number of good translations.
Then there is CHARLIE'S AUNT. LADY WINDEMERE'S FAN, by Oscar Wilde, is a charming and amusing piece. More charming that downright funny.

You might try "Smash" by Jeffrey Hatcher -- it's an adaptation of a Shaw novel, cast of 10, 5M 5F. Very smart, with very strong characters. We did it years ago and had a lot of fun with it.

Great to see the Moliere suggestions for this...!

Perhaps Moliere's most "mannered" comedy was "The Misanthrope." I've got a rhymed version available via Playscripts in both full-length and 40-minute variations, though I'd be happy to e-mail anyone a perusal copy for free.

"Precious Young Maidens" and "The Critique of the School for Wives" were both also very much comedies of manners. (I have those available too.)

I second the 'Black Comedy' recommendation. Samuel French.

Also consider David Ives' adaptation of Mark Twain's 'Is He Dead?', which is a full length comedy farce. Playscripts for the rights.
