    Hi all,

I'm a first-time musical director with a question about making cuts in our script. We're doing Working in the spring, and I know what cuts we're making, but am less sure about how those cuts ought to be reflected in the scripts I give to students. Should I give them the script unedited and tell them what we're cutting, or give them the edited version, which would have some words and phrases blacked out, and a page removed. If you've got advice or experience with this, esp within a community of faith, I'd greatly appreciate it.

    Best,
    Robert

First, any and all cuts must be approved by the author/publisher.

Unless you’ve pre-arranged with your licensor what cuts you wish to make you have no legal right to make them and it would be unethical (as well as illegal) to do so without permission Also, did you acquire the right to create your own script (you were talking about scripts with edits given your students)?

Always seek the rights. If you can’t get them, you may need to change to a different show choice.
