I teach an awesome group of kids who can play old-time villains and heroines. We are looking for a one-act melodrama.   Suggestions?

We produced The Paper Bag Bandit Rides Again (Pioneer) last year.  I also looked at Rascals Under the Big Top.  I liked both of them as they managed to be melodramas without being particularly sexist or having negative stereotypes of Native Americans.  They also both have large casts and a lot of humor.

The students benefited so much from the movement work (lots and lots of posing), and had fun with the stories (their motto was "Embrace the cheese," which says a lot ;-)

Perhaps the best decision we made was to have live piano, played by different students during different scenes, and all the music composed by the students.

    Go for it, and enjoy!

Pioneer Drama has a million of these. I personally am familiar with Blazing Guns at Roaring Gulch and Daze of Olde, which is basically a Western melodrama set in Medieval times. But really, there's something to like about all of them if you want to fave fun with a campy audience-pleaser.

Thank you so much!  The Blazing Guns at Roaring Gulch is the WINNER!!!  Whoot Whoot. Kids and myself are super stoked about this show. Thank you so much for recommending it!

I have a melodrama that I wrote many years ago that is set Western. It can be done as a one-act, though I originally wrote it as two. I have a music folio to go with it. It's called "The Counterfeit Capitalist, or Who Broke the Bank". E-mail me separately if you are interested in seeing it.

THE WILDFLOWERING OF CHASTITY by Dutton Foster (Dramatic Publishing) is a conventional melo-drama one-act play with 4 males & 4 females.  The villian wants the property and the girl.  The old auntie has no resources.  The hero saves the day.  There are five comedic parts that can be played up or down.  The tech is adaptable to a full set or just furniture pieces.
