Seeking play suggestions

I am seeking a play with serious subject matter , great characters to portray and as well written as the Crucible.  I have a small cast of 10 students and would love any suggestions you may have.

I love The Diviners. Also, Anatomy of Gray by the same author is great

I would echo "Diviners" and "Anatomy of Gray."  I love 'The Last Night of Ballyhoo" by Alfred Uhry and "The Boys Next Door" by Tom Griffin. Both are comedies that deal with serious subjects.  We are about to start production of "And a Child Shall Lead" by Michael Slade.  It deals with the children that lived in the Terezin "Jewish City" run by the Nazis in WWII.

Time on Fire by Timothy Mason.  It's a really beautiful play about young people during the American Revolutionary War.  It follows the experiences of a variety of young people as they navigate the trials of adolescence while living in a world in chaos.

I'm not sure what your male/female breakdown is, so here is just a list of dramatic material we have found successful:

    Letters to Sala
    My Name is Asher Lev
    Laramie Project
    Terror by Gaslight
    The Good Fight
    Decision Height

Voices in the Dark: A Salem Story is the same basic story as the Crucible with a few clearer pathways to follow. Overall a good script in the same genre as Crucible.

Top Girls by Caryl Churchill - well written but definitely quirky - all women though
Letters to Sala (Dramatists) - fun to conceive and a fascinating story and a Holocaust story that is quite hopeful
Flowers for Algernon can be done with a smaller cast and you can be creative with staging

I second the Jim Leonard pieces. He's an excellent writer. You may also want to consider These Shining Lives or Triangle if you're interested in portraying some interesting history/worker's rights issues and giving a lot of performance opportunities for women.

I Never Saw Another Butterfly by Celeste Raspanti.  It's about the Jewish children who passed through Terezin, a ghetto.  It's a great script.
