It's a great time to talk costuming and make up design with the students. I think you can do a lot with both of those to help make something spooky, but not corny scary. Lighting options can really help create the mood. Consider the difference between a spotlight casting a small area of light on stage versus a lamp on stage to create a small pool of light. Finally, nothing can create suspense better than well-crafted pacing of the lines. Poe especially likes repetition and this can be played with to really increase the suspense. I would challenge them to consider all the nonverbal communication that can add to the lines and setting as well.
