Hello all ! I just heard about ITS and I was wondering if anyone can explain the point system (how it works and how you get points) and what it means to be inducted and why its important to me as a High School freshmen? Thanks in advance.

    Hi Nicholas!

You get points based on your work in your school's theatre department. ITS is an honor society, recognizing the drama students at each school who track and earn enough points to be inducted.

You should talk to the drama teacher at your school for more details. He or she probably has a list of the point system in use and can tell you more about how it's handled at your particular school.

I think the great thing about becoming a thespian is that you can put that on any resume or college application and it shows that you don't just attend school but you participate in activities beyond the regular curriculum. ITS also has tons of ways for you to get where on the web. Your school has to have a Thespian troupe in order for you to collect points.

Thank you all for your replies. My school does have ITS as a program however we do not start school for another 2 weeks. I just wanted to do some research on how points are earned. I know that 50% of your first 10 points can be earned out side of school. I was just cast in Sweeney Todd teen at a community theater so I was wonder how that would work. Thank you again in advance.

I think it is wonderful that you are doing research into ITS.

Every school may handle the first 10 points differently. At our school, you have to work in at least two shows at the school in order to get inducted. Being in outside shows is not a problem, however, it just takes documentation.  I required a letter from the director with the amount of hours the student spent on their show as evidence.  Each director may do it differently. We only allow 5 points (50 hours) of outside work to be counted per year, this was to ensure that the student prioritized helping the troupe at the school.

    Congratulations for your part,

Break a leg and have a wonderful year,

    Hello, Nicholas

We're glad to hear you're interested in ITS! Here is a link to the Official Thespian Point System - our recommended guidelines for troupes. We have some basic policies (a minimum of 10 points must be earned to be inducted, up to half of those points can come from outside school, etc.) but we understand that each school/troupe is different and encourage troupe directors to customize the point system to fit their troupe's needs. After you read the original document, check with your school's troupe director to what/if any changes s/he may have made to the system, and if the troupe has a constitution you can peruse, so you know what to expect!

There is a points chart or the easiest way I find to do it is that my students get 0.1 point for every hour they devote towards something theatrical.  We have a sign-in sheet for work days and for rehearsals.  Naturally, the kids with the larger parts have more rehearsals and therefore get more points.  It works out quite well for us.  I have a spreadsheet that I created in order to keep up with each kid and how many points they have and what it's for.  I will happily e-mail it to you if you would like.  Just let me know.
