  • 1.  Wagon - Young Frankenstein

    Hi All,

I need to build the wagon for "Roll in the Hay" from Young Frankenstein. I have no real understanding on how to build the axles or wheels. Has anyone done the show before? Has anyone made a working wagon? I would prefer to build one rather than borrowing/renting one but I am not opposed to borrowing or renting. Does anyone have one to borrow/rent. Any and all advice is welcome!!

    Thank you!!

Hi Cheri – the biggest hurdle to construct the wagon will be the axles and wheels... so I'd purchase those already made… Sorry, I don't have any drawings in my archive -   Here are three good sources for wooden wheels and axles:

      1.) Amish Handmade -  http://www.storesonlinepro.com/store/1504461/product/322-axle

2.) CUSTOM WAGON WHEELS in Lexington, OH 44904 - https://customwagonwheels.com/product/small-wagon-wheels-gun-cart-wheels/

     3.) Custom Wagons - https://www.customwagons.com/wagon_wheels.htm

Don is right - the wheels and axles are the biggest hurdle. However, here are a couple of ideas:

I just did an online search for "garden carts" and a whole bunch came up, including some with very large wheels that look like wagon wheels instead of bicycle wheels. These could probably be modified for your purposes. Might be worth looking into.

Also, you might want to look around and see if anyone has a cart from Fiddler that works or can be modified.

Finally, and depending on your scenic design concept, you may not need a real, literal, working cart.

Our Wagon was a forced perspective platform that was lifted and placed on regular casters.  The unit was covered in black fabric then several hula skirts.  We covered her with a tiki beach umbrella.  The Wagon wheels where simply attached to the sided of the platform.  With all the hay and the dark lighting - no one even could tell.
