    Inspiring Creativity and Imagination

In the later years of my teaching career I found that some of my students really struggled with creativity and imagination while working in Improvisation or with scene or script writing.  Everything they seemed to draw from regarding character, situation, theme, or conflict was from pieces of film, TV or plays/musicals they already knew.   They had a very hard time creating something original and new.   I decided to use writing in my theatre classroom as a way to stimulate their imagination and creativity.   I began to do dramatic free writing once a week for 30 minutes.   The ideas and writings they put together were amazing.   And then later in the class they were able to work with their free writing journal when we got to scene or script writing.  These previous writings allowed them to "build" upon character and storyline ideas in extended writing assignments.    I used a variety of prompts.  I encouraged them to write "dramatically" as a character in a monologue or a two person scene, or an internal monologue.  It was really up to them what and how they wrote.  It is "free" writing after all.  Sometimes the prompt was just a title, other times it was a starting line for a monologue or scene situation.   It was amazing to share some of these in class ,as they all had the same writing prompt, to share the creativity in their work.  Reading where they went with each of the prompts individually restored my faith in their creativity and imagination.

I am including the link here to a document that has some of the writing prompts, but you can certainly create your own.   I hope you find this useful and have some fun!  Let me know if you have any questions or want more info.   Dramatic Free writing Prompts LINK:  Weekly Dramatic Free Writing Prompts

I absolutely LOVE this idea and will be doing it with my advanced class next semester.  Thank you so much for sharing!
