  • 1.  The Crucible - one-act version

    Posted 11-18-2016 09:32

I've clicked through several threads and I'm not finding what I'm looking for. Does anyone have a 40-minute version of The Crucible they are willing to share? Or can you direct me to a place where I can get it? This show has been used at the Texas UIL competition in the past and I would like to look at it for my school's entry this year.

    Thanks!

Does the Arthur Miller estate really allow this?

The Crucible is one of the most produced plays for Texas' UIL One Act play contest. They definitely allow it. You have to get permission from Dramatist, though.

It is allowed by UIL as a performance of "scenes from" the work. We still get with the publisher and buy a complete set of scripts and pay royalties for the number of performances we will be doing. We end up highlighting the scenes we use in the performance, and striking out the rest. Sometimes the publisher wants to see the cuts before they are approved.

Ava, I realize it's been a few years, lol, but did you have any luck finding cut version of The Crucible for OAP?  I'm curious, not only of the version, but also how the cast was cut down to accommodate the UIL rules.  Any help would be much appreciated! :)

Goodness, yes it has! We ended up cutting the script ourselves and doubling some of the characters.

I haven't directed OAP for several years now. I had sliced out individual lines and sometimes words to trim down the content to get it under 40 minutes. I don't think they allow that any more under UIL rules. Also, Arthur Miller's estate may not be authorizing cuts any more, so be sure to contact the publisher to see what you can do.

I wish you well with your production! It's a great story and one my students were excited about performing.
