  • 1.  Technical Theatre Certs

Hi everyone.  Thanks for all your help so far with lighting and sound questions.  I'm currently planning what I'd like my courses to look like next year.  My school is big on vocational training.  We have welding, construction, culinary arts, cosmetology, nursing, etc..  I was wondering if anyone knows of an entry level Technical theatre certification that my students can earn through a high school course or is there a tech school that I can partner with to help create a certified course?

My goal is to have a semester or year round course in technical theatre where the students work on main stage plays, band/ choir performances, assemblies, etc., and then hopefully walk away with a certification they can use to work in the entertainment industry.  I live close to Nashville, so there is opportunity for skilled technicians.

    Thanks for any advice.

    Ernesto,

My husband works professionally in tech theater and has been helping me wrap my head around this very subject for several years now.  He shares resources with me so I can learn (and try and convince my school we need a TD!)

I am combing through these resources (from USITT & EdTA) now and they might be of interest to you:

    Hi,

As others have indicated, USITT/EdTA Backstage Exam is an excellent place to find guidance and, although not a certification, does provide a certificate upon successful completion of the exam.

Another element of this is your training and readiness to teach a course as you describe. Tenessee does not appear to grant license-renewal credits for workshops in
technical theatre but workshops of this type still may be a great choice as you reaffirm your skills.

    Thanks,

    Dana
