One of the BEST Theatre Teacher trainings that I have done for the past five summers is a week at Belmont University in Nashville, TN at the Tennessee Arts Academy. And it takes teachers from ANYWHERE! This summer the dates are July 9-14th.

It is a week-long and you attend three theatre specific core sessions each day. I have taken core classes in: Meisner, Self-Filming for Auditions, Devised Theatre, Shakespeare, Consent in the Theatre Classroom, Improv Comedy, RASA Boxes, Choreography (even if you aren't a dancer), Knight-Thompson Speechwork, Story Drama, Musical Theatre Directing Strategies, Chekhov, and Creating a Podcast with Students. For someone who did not graduate with a Theatre degree these core classes have given me a foundation for teaching theatre that has made me more confident, competent, and comprehensive teacher and director. There are other workshops offered every day and musing sessions with amazing artists. You can stay in the dorms and breakfasts, lunches, and several dinners are provided. You also receive a certificate stating you earned 38 hours that you can use toward recertification.

More info is here https://www.tnartsacademy.org/ or reply  with any questions you may have and I can answer them or find someone to answer them! It is always a delight to hang out with a whole bunch of Theatre teachers for an entire week and share experiences and issues that only Theatre teachers understand!!

These are the Theatre Core Classes this summer and they look INCREDIBLE...

Playing with the Classics: Adapting Ancient Works with Young Artists

    Instructor: Kristin Hunt

Participants will explore practical ways to find, adapt, and stage classic works in the public domain with young artists as cocreators. Sessions will focus on adapting, devising, and applying cocreation techniques to work with existing scripts in the public domain, with an emphasis on using ancient works as a source of "new" material.

Moving and Creating the Laban Way

    Instructor: Renee Redding Jones

This workshop will offer an experiential exploration of Laban's effort theory and more. The experiences are designed to sharpen the eye, bring clarity to choices, create the functional and expressive life of characters, expand a range of expression, and teach a vocabulary that can be shared with students to develop specificity and nuance.

Act Before You Think! Unleashing the Power of Individuality Through Practical Aesthetics

Instructor: https://www.tnartsacademy.org/taa-year/theatre-core-classes Click to follow link."> Tyson Kaup

In this workshop participants will explore practical aesthetics. This brass tacks and comprehensive acting technique employs a simple four-step process in order to mine the essential action of a scene and unleash the power of the actor's personal self-expression while serving the intentions of the playwright in refreshing and surprising ways.

Hope to meet some of you in Nashville this summer!

Yes! The BEST PD for theatre teachers anywhere. I have attended for many years and I really can't imagine starting my school year without it. It is a time for me to collaborate with my theatre peeps, get inspired by the wonderful professional faculty, and be treated like the educational professionals we are. I can honestly say that I am still using many of the lessons I have learned over the years in my classes and/or for the stage.

Because of TAA, I have connected with so many other theatre educators and theatre professionals from around the world. Many of us have formed bonds that can not be broken. Often, theatre teachers are lone wolves in our schools, but I know that I have a group I can always reach out to for support, encouragement, or just ideas for a new lesson plan, etc.

TAA is life-changing. It will not only change you as a theatre educator but as a person. It reminds me that what I do matters, even in the most difficult times. It reminds me why I do what I do and inspires me to keep doing my best because I have the potential to change young peoples' lives.

I know giving up a week of summer break is difficult, but you won't be disappointed. With it being at the end of the summer, it actually inspires me and gets me excited to return to a new school year. It's worth it!

Tennessee Arts Academy has shaped me as an educator!
My two friends Lea and Michelle have said it eloquently, so I will simply add my two pennies!

Is giving up a week of your summer a challenge? Yes. Is it worth it? ABSOLUTELY yes!

Through TAA I have gained confidence, new skill sets, and wonderful lifelong friends!
To be immersed in a sea of Arts Educators, receiving training with experts from around the country....well, TAA is surely one of my "happy places."

Honestly, I would not miss TAA!
    So grateful for this program!

See ya'll in Nashville this summer!

I couldn't agree more. Training for theatre teachers of this caliber is very rare. It's an excellent opportunity!
