  • 1.  Summer Professional Development

Now that it is summer time and our hearts turn toward napping... and maybe a bit of professional development (after our naps). This will be my 5th summer attending the Tennessee Arts Academy held in Nashville, TN on the Belmont University Campus. I found out about it when I had a college student at Belmont and you don't have to be a Tennessee teacher to attend!!! They have a week long track just for high school and one for middle school Theatre teachers. It is the best training I have ever received (plus 38 hours of PD credit). This summer it is JULY 10-15th.

And let me tell you, Nashville is a city that appreciates its Arts Teachers. The entire Academy supports, celebrates, and reveres the teaching profession and understands the challenges (and sometimes lack of community) for arts teachers since we are usually the only Theatre teacher at our schools. It is a week of learning with a whole lot of laughter and some amazing meals and fun Nashville eventings.

The first summer I attended the TAA, during the introductions, one teacher said, "This is always the best week of my year." And I thought to myself, "How is a week of professional development the best week of his year? How sad is the rest of his year?" But now, I would say the same thing. It is a respite and recreation week for me. And I wanted to extend an invitation to anyone else looking for a week to recharge and reignite your passion for teaching theatre....

FIND MORE INFO and an application here (also, apply for a scholarship or see if your school can help!)

Enjoy your summer and get some DRAMATICALLY WONDERFUL NAPS!

    Hi Lea:

Thanks for sharing your Tennessee Arts Academy (TAA) story. So glad you enjoy the Academy experience and continue to return each year.

2022 promises to be another great year. We are back on the Belmont University campus with a stellar lineup of class offerings, faculty, speakers, and performances.

And there are lots of special activities all week, including our midweek gala Bravo! Banquet (all participants get free admission for dinner and the performance), where we will premier a new cabaret show (All For You) starring Broadway stars Kate Baldwin and Aaron Lazar, with musical direction by Luke Frazier.

We are still accepting applications, but there are just a few spots remaining, so if anyone is interested in attending, now is the time. Check out our website for all the latest: tnartsacademy.org

Thanks again Lea and I look forward to seeing you this summer in Nashville!
